The First Year Office helps incoming students make a successful transition to a new and exciting learning environment at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Our staff enjoy guiding and assisting students through the first year of their academic journey. We aim to give incoming first year students the tools needed to make informed decisions during this transition period and plan their remaining years at the University with ease.

**Your opportunity**:
As the First Year Advisor - Intercultural Learning and Experience, you will be responsible for ensuring First Year Engineering International students receive accurate, timely and responsive advising and support on the needs experienced by First Year Engineering students.
You will also be responsible for the development of programs and supports to promote First Year academic success with an emphasis on intercultural learning and experience.

**Your responsibilities will include**:

- Advising students on academic and/or financial matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual's background
- Acts as the first point of contact for program
- related inquiries, including but not limited to providing detailed information on program and/ or course eligibility requirements, procedures, policies and deadlines
- Creating, delivering and leading programs, seminars and/or workshops targeted to support the needs of Engineering First Year students as it relates to intercultural fluency and experience
- Evaluating and recommending appropriate learning opportunities for students
- Reviewing and approving changes to program requirements for exceptional cases
- Handling sensitive and/or confidential information
- Conceptualizing, organizing and executing event activities

**Essential Qualifications**:

- Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience.
- Minimum four (4) years experience in student advising and/or student services in a Registrar's or Admissions Office.
- Demonstrated skills, training and experience in advising on academic and programmatic matters, student development programming and group facilitation in a University setting
- Knowledge and experience in academic policy and procedure, preferably at the University of Toronto
- Expertise with intercultural diversity, equity, and international learning opportunities
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement programming that integrates and supports all students in the global classroom
- Ability to work effectively with highly diverse and demanding communities of students
- Well developed verbal and written communication skills with exceptional presentation and group facilitation skills
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and work environment.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work; strong attention to detail; demonstrated initiative and discretion
- Demonstrated good judgement and ability to interact with others with tact courtesy and patience
- Ability to work under pressure with a large volume of work under limited supervision
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team

**Assets (Nonessential)**:

- Advanced degree in higher education, counselling or advising
- Experience supervising student mentors and volunteers
- Working knowledge of ROSI or similar Student Record System
- Experience using social networking tools for student outreach and advising
- Fluency in a second language other than English
