**Position Title**: Housing and Outreach Worker

**Reporting to**: Manager, Labour Market Orientation and Settlement Programs

**Working Hours**: This is a full-time temporary contract position until December 31, 2024, with the possibility of an extension pending funding approval. (35 hours/week). This position requires in-person work from the office 5 days a week

**Hourly rate**: $27.06 per hour

The Housing and Outreach Worker will be responsible for conducting community outreach to recruit clients who identify as asylum claimants. The incumbent will deliver information sessions about our services in the community to raise awareness about our services and to register clients to receive settlement, employment, mental health and housing support. The incumbent will also be assessing asylum claimants' needs through a diversion lens and conduct brief case management with a specific focus on establishing housing-related goals/tasks for continued support through outreach services, and maintaining appropriate and timely documentation and records.

The Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto (NEW) is an award winning not-for-profit charity organization that was founded by a group of Latin American refugees in 1983 with a vision of strong women building strong communities. A multi-service agency with operations in three Toronto locations serving 6000+ Immigrants and Refugees annually. NEW also delivers special programs focused on immigrant women empowerment, leadership and skills development, and mentorship and career advancement for immigrant and refugee women.

**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Participant Screening, Assessment, and Intake: Act as the first line of contact to engage and support clients who need housing support.
- Brief Case Management, Shelter Diversion, and Data Management: Assess participants needs through a Diversion lens and conduct brief case management with a specific focus on establishing housing-related goals/tasks for continued support through outreach services, when necessary, maintaining appropriate and timely documentation and records.
- Conduct housing outreach to potential landlords and community support services.
- Facilitate weekly information and training sessions to support clients with navigation and registration with MyAccesstoHousingTO, including Choice Base Cycles and Annual Renewals.
- Provide appropriate referrals, information and advocacy to other support services to assist clients.
- Work closely with landlords to stabilize the tenancy.
- Provide wrap-around support on relevant housing issues, income support, employment and social supports with the ultimate goal of making clients independent.
- Educate and empower clients with the intention to maintain stable housing.
- Develop and implement community outreach plans to promote our services and engage isolated asylum claimants.
- Maintain accurate case management records and complete reporting required by the supervisor in a timely manner.
- Conduct community outreach to recruit clients and to raise awareness about our services.

- Participate in training of new staff, practicum students, and volunteers as required
- Attend workshops and training as recommended by NEW
- Take an active role in the upkeep of staff areas and offices
- Participate on committees as needed

**SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS**:

- A Bachelor degree in social/human services related field and/or relevant education and experience.
- Knowledge and awareness of Toronto’s Shelter system, subsidized housing and housing resources and referrals are required.
- Demonstrated competence to work with challenging behaviour and stressful situations and possess effective conflict and crisis management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and ability to set effective personal boundaries with both clients and co-workers.
- Proven ability to problem-solve, multi-task and work both independently and as an effective team member.
- Certification or ability to become certified as soon as possible in NVCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) and Level C First Aid and CPR, including working knowledge of AED is required.
