Job Summary

The role of the Financial Analyst is to support the Department of Athletics and Recreation in key strategic and operational finance matters. The position will oversee operational financial needs such as detailed reconciliations; perform core accounting functions; participate in budget planning and monitoring; develop and monitor financial control systems; prepare comprehensive financial reports; provide recommendations on financial issues and system processing; analyze financial operations to make recommendation for improvement; develop effective processes, systems and procedures; undertake month-end and year-end financial activities; and provide financial analysis and oversight of certain key functions. The role will also support the Director of Finance in strategic finance matters by developing analytics tools, performing analysis and supporting key financial decision-making in the department. The role is integral to the Department in assisting to ensure overall financial stewardship and in supporting the financial planning and budgeting processes. The Financial Analyst reports to the Finance Manager, but has accountabilities for strategic support to the Director of Finance, Athletics and Recreation.

The Department of Athletics & Recreation is one of the core departments within the Vice President Students. With a normal operating budget exceeding $35 million annually, the Department is also responsible for facilities with over $200 million. Revenue sources include business activities, student fees, donations and university funding. The Department is among the largest and most successful of its kind in Canada, with services and programs being provided by approximately 150 full-time and over 1,000 part-time staff located in facilities across the university campus. The Department comprises approximately 35 individual departmental units, including business operations, facilities, recreation, varsity sport as well as support units.

The position typically works in an office environment within the Department s facilities. The scope of financial activities undertaken is quite varied and includes reviewing financial documentation, assigning tasks out to clerical staff within the department, in addition to undertaking analysis and financial reporting. The role requires the ability to build relationships in the Department, support the finance function, and build effective internal controls and procedures within the department.

Organizational Status

The Financial Analyst role is a key role in the finance unit of the Department of Athletics & Recreation. The Department is a core unit within the Vice President Students, and supports a wide variety of student activities on campus, including competitive and recreational sport activities. The Department also undertakes a number of programs and activities which serve the university and community as a whole. The role is active within the Department, routinely working with operational leaders not only to provide effective financial oversight, but also to address and resolve financial issues that may arise. The role will oversee some tasks assigned to other members of the Department, especially clerical finance and support staff.

Work Performed

Strategic, Budgeting and Financial Planning Support:
- Provides support to the Director of Finance in key strategic financial areas such as planning, budgeting and systems implementation.- Undertakes financial analysis for the Department and Director of Finance in support of key financial decision-making.- Actively participates in the annual budgeting process, including the development of budgeting tools and providing financial analysis of key trends and indicators, as well as ad hoc budget revisions and reporting.- Prepares comprehensive financial analyses, summaries, variance and cost control reports, and other financial information for the Director of Finance and other key leaders in the Department on a periodic and ad hoc basis.- Undertakes monthly and quarterly financial analysis and reporting, ensuring compliance with the University s reporting requirements.- Prepares financial reports to parties outside the
