Nature of the Position

Reporting to the Manager of Community Services, the Arts and Culture Coordinator is responsible for developing and implementing programs, initiatives, and events related to arts and culture and administration of the municipal art collection and community grants program.

The Arts and Culture Coordinator ensures that programs and services are developed through a lens of inclusion, diversity, equity, and reconciliation and are designed to meet the needs and interests of the community. This role collaborates with various individuals, community groups, and funders to support local artists and arts organizations and engage the general public in the arts. In addition, this role provides oversight for the Sechelt Arts Festival, and the Summer Music Series, and acts as the liaison to the Festival of the Written Arts and the Sunshine Coast Arts Council.

Essential Competencies
- Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Cultural Planning, Recreation & Leisure, or related discipline
- Minimum two years’ experience in planning and implementing community arts programs
- Experience working with artists and arts organizations within a not-for-profit and/or municipal government setting
- Experience in the planning and delivery of events, grant writing and developing marketing material for cultural activities and programs
- Excellent organization skills and the ability to prioritize effectively amidst competing deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with diverse groups, external organizations, and the community at large
- Effective communication skills while demonstrating diplomacy and tact
- Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license

Preferred Competencies
- Education and/or experience working with indigenous communities and awareness of indigenous cultural protocols
- Basic knowledge of the functions of Municipal Government and provincial and federal legal standards and requirements in the arts (copyright, fees etc).

Working Conditions

This is a regular, part-time unionized position within the BCGEU. The wage is Grid 13, $39.10 - $43.45 per hour plus a competitive benefits package. The hours of work are 26.25 hours per week between Monday and Friday. Flexibility is occasionally required to work evenings and weekends based on events scheduling. The District of Sechelt supports employment equity in accordance with the Human Rights Act of BC.
