Position: Research Assistant

Start Date: early-June 2023

End Date: This is a short-term position ending September 30, 2023.

Salary/Benefits: $28.87/hour plus 14% benefits.

Hours: Total of 125 hours starting early-June until September 30, 2023.

Reports to: Annalea Sordi, VSAC Research Manager

Payroll and Administration: Principal Investigator Dr. Mandeep Kaur Mucina, Associate Professor, School of Child and Youth Care, HSD, University of Victoria

Position Summary:
In October 2019, Project Respect - the violence prevention education branch of the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre (VSAC) - received 5-year funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada to undertake the delivery of our SHIFTing Culture program focused on preventing gender-based violence using anti-oppressive, anti-colonial, and Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) methodologies. VSAC and the University of Victoria School of Child and Youth Care have collaborated to measure the impact of the program and to undertake YPAR research over the last 4 years. The project uses community-engaged and decolonizing methodologies to undertake this research.

With the program evaluation research study in its final year, the Research Assistant will be assisting the VSAC Research Manager in the compilation, synthesis, and analysis of research data to evaluate the SHIFTing Culture program and with knowledge mobilization activities to share key findings. This is a term position from early-June to September 30, 2023 of 125 total hours.

Job Responsibilities:

- Lead the process of compiling, synthesizing, and analyzing survey data from multiple surveys using SPSS statistical software.
- Assist with the write up and presentation of key survey findings to evaluate Project Respect’s SHIFTing Culture Project.
- Assist with research implementation by prevention staff, including ensuring adherence to research ethics protocols.
- Assist with literature reviews.
- Assist with creating and disseminating knowledge mobilization products (e.g. research reports, articles, infographics, presentations, etc.) for community stakeholders (e.g. students, parents, school staff, school districts).
- Participate constructively as a member of the research team.
- Provide support with writing and editing papers to Principal Investigator Dr. Mandeep Kaur Mucina.

**Qualifications**:
Education/Experience:

- Master’s Degree or pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Psychology, Sociology, Public Health, Education or related field
- Quantitative human research experience a requirement
- Competency with SPSS statistical software

Job Skills (Abilities):

- Ability to articulate and work from an anti-oppressive, feminist analysis of the issue of gender-based violence in our society using an intersectional lens
(i.e., understands how gender-based violence is connected to, and inseparable from, other forms of violence such as colonialism, racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc.).
- Demonstrated knowledge of root cause approaches to sexual assault/gender-based violence prevention programming.
- Excellent quantitative research skills, including competency with SPSS statistical software.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
- Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills.
- Well-developed planning and organizational skills.
- Competent in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to write and edit research reports.
- Demonstrated ability to create other knowledge mobilization products (e.g., articles, infographics, presentations, etc.) would be an asset, but not required.
