Job Summary
The Lead Research Technician is an expert in islet biology research. They are responsible for overseeing all functions of the Lynn lab. The incumbent independently develops, plans and conducts highly complex experiments using specialized molecular techniques that will support worldwide advances in diabetes research influencing both academia and industry. The Lead Research Technician provides specialized technical advice, training and guidance to undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research associates at the University but also to collaborators across Canada and the world.
Organizational Status
The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff in nine divisions distributed across British Columbia. Specialty training programs are offered in Cardiac Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC).
The incumbent reports directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Francis Lynn. The incumbent works with a large team of investigators, research associates, research technicians, postdoctoral fellows, as well as graduate and undergraduate students within other laboratories at BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) and the wider UBC community. They will collaborate with a variety of national and international research labs as part of major team grants and networks including the Canadian Institute of Health Research, the American National Institutes of Health and the International Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation funded projects.
Work Performed
Provides expertise, training and technical advice on a wide variety of pancreatic islet research approaches and develops new approaches, that are adopted internationally, for studying how islets develop embryologically and function using pluripotent stem cells.
Solves complex, non-standard technical problems with human embryonic stem cell genome editing experiments and provides leadership and advises others across Canada, in troubleshooting.
Develops new and highly specialized techniques that become standard operating procedures across research fields in both academia and industry, including genome editing approaches, new cell reprograming techniques, robotic cell culture pipelines and pancreatic islet differentiation protocols.
Provides highly specialized expertise, training, and technical advice on how to derive and grow human pluripotent stem cells to those that visit from across the world.
Provides expertise, consultation and technical advice on diverse research projects involving experimental animals, including metabolic studies, multiple surgeries, post-operative care, and breeding schemes for triple transgenic strains.
Liaises and communicates with other technical experts in both industry and academia both nationally and internationally to present, promote and provide advice on a wide variety of pancreatic islet research approaches.
Provides substantial and direct intellectual contributions at various stages of research projects including manuscript and grant writing, figure preparation and interpretation of experimental results; coordinates submission of written works to international publishers and funders.
Performs complex tasks using cutting edge technologies and trains others in these approaches and maintains infrastructure required for these assays, including: CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing system, single-cell genomics; NanoString assay; derivation of induced pluri
