**Job Profile**

The Summer Student is responsible for scheduling of staff for shifts especially for the Relief Women’s Advocate at both our North and South shelter(s) as per the requirements of the Collective Agreement. This individual will also participate in providing support to front line staff, assist with childcare needs, cooking, and light cleaning at the shelter. Sandgate Women’s Shelter of York Region Inc. works within a harm reduction, feminist, and intersectional framework; following the mission, vision, and guiding principles of the organization.

**Canada Summer Jobs Requirements (Please note the following)**:

- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age,
- Must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (S.C. 2001, c. 27),
- Must be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/ territorial legislation and regulations. _**Please note that international students are not eligible.**_

**Major Duties / Responsibilities**
- Primarily responsible for scheduling of Staff specifically Relief Women’s Advocate ensuring that all vacant shifts (i.e. vacation, leave of absence(s) and or emergency shifts) are filled within the window of time as stipulated in the collective agreement,
- Clear understanding of the relevant articles in the collective agreement to be able to accurately exercise scheduling practices,
- Assist front line staff in providing support and assistance to women regarding their children’s specific needs/issues,
- Assist the CYW in maintaining children’s area (including safety, supplies purchase recommendations) and ensure toys and play areas are regularly sanitized or disinfected,
- Assist front line staff in preparing meals and light cleaning in the shelter during down times when not dealing with scheduling needs,
- Understand and comply with all organizational policies, procedures, and service delivery guide, including safety, security, and emergency procedures,
- Always demonstrate cultural sensitivity,
- Collect and report relevant data and statistical information, as required,
- Completion of all administrative aspects of the position, including but not limited to, database updates, monthly reports, communication logs, women’s notes, intake, and discharge documentation,
- Participates in the regular maintenance of the shelter,
- Adheres to all emergency practice procedures,
- Assist in the monitoring incoming calls, visitors, and property, following all safety and confidentiality policies,
- Adheres to all health and safety requirements,
- Maintains full confidentiality of the organization, as per Sandgate policy.
- Attendance at relevant meetings and events, as required,
- Additional duties, as assigned.

**Requisite Qualifications and Competencies**

**Knowledge**
- Knowledge of trauma, substance use, mental health, and their interaction(s) with violence against women would be an asset,
- Knowledge of the social services system(s) would be an asset.

**Skills**
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize and multi-task to achieve or surpass identified goals,
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of a team,
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate effectively with all service users and coworkers through various tools and techniques,
- Demonstrate active listening and ability to respond appropriately when interacting with individuals or in groups,
- Ability to find solutions to problems and provide workable solutions,
- Demonstrated professionalism and a positive work ethic within communication skills, interpersonal effectiveness, and conflict resolution,
- Ability to liaise effectively with community agencies and the public,
- Takes initiative to respond effectively to changes in direction and priorities,
- Fluency in a second language.

**Other Job Requirements**
- Valid CPR/First Aid certification required,
- Flexible schedule as shifts may rotate, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,
- Flexibility to work in, and travel to, the North Shelter,
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Check, Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and valid Car insurance,
