**Reports To**: Jordan's Principle Coordinator

**General Description**:
Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre is centrally located in the urban Indigenous community of Halifax and is looking for **One (1) Parenting Journey Cultural Home Visitor.** The Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Center is a charitable non-profit organization which provides over 45 culturally grounded programs including a Family Recourse Center, Jordan’s Principle, Daycare, and Community Action Plan. This new program will be based on cultural knowledge and will work closely with the existing programs of the Center.

The Parenting Journey is a home visitation program that provides support for families experiencing complex social, emotional and familial challenges. With the support of the Friendship Centre team, Parenting Journey Home Visitor work collaboratively with families to build meaningful helping relationships while collectively identifying strengths, resources, challenges, and priorities using a holistic and culture based framework.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Work collaboratively with children and their families by providing support to access services
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality
- Ensure the program delivery is congruent with the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre’s mission, vision and philosophy
- Work with target age group: Indigenous Families with children 0 - 18 years old (up to the 19th birthday) experiencing multiple risk factors including, but not limited to poverty, ability, lone parenting, social isolation, unstable housing / homelessness, family violence, substance misuse, emotional / mental health issues, and generational trauma
- Support will be provided in the areas of child/youth growth and development, parent-child relationships, parenting knowledge and skills, family life management, and community connections/referrals.
- Must demonstrate sensitivity, compassion, and a non-judgemental attitude, as well as initiative, self-direction and teamwork.
- Ensure community are informed and well connected to the many existing programs of the Friendship Centre and will work to identify existing resources outside of the Centre.
- Work in partnership with the Family Resource Centre, Youth Programming and Jordan’s Principle to ensure access and understanding of existing programming with in the Urban Indigenous Community.
- Must show an understanding of and appreciation for how the determinants of health impact families in the community and have knowledge in Indigenous ways of knowledge.
- Prepare reports for the Executive Director
- Attend professional development opportunities as requested

**Qualifications**:

- Education in Early Childhood Development, Family Studies, Human Services, Psychology, and/or Sociology
- Understanding of Indigenous Culture and the Urban Indigenous Community
- Experience in parenting, and/or working/volunteering with young children and families.
- Knowledge of a range of community resources relevant to families and the ability to connect families with these resources.
- Ability and skills necessary to communicate respectfully with families with diverse Indigenous backgrounds such as: First Nations, Inuit and Metis.
- Good oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain personal/program boundaries, while providing supportive services.
- CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification.
- Valid Nova Scotia driver’s License and ownership of a reliable, insured vehicle is required.
- Satisfactory criminal record, vulnerable sector and child abuse registry checks.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment
- **Indigenous Ancestry is an asset, must self-identify**
