**Main Purpose and Function**
The Planner I provides project support and planning expertise as a part of a multi-disciplinary team leading integrated “One Water” initiatives to service growth and improve city sewer and drainage servicing while addressing pollution from sewage and urban runoff, and incorporating other City objective such as equity, biodiversity, and livability.

As part of the City-Wide Utility Planning Initiatives team, this position is responsible for supporting engagement with the City’s Planning, Urban Design, and Sustainability department on land use policies and plans to ensure sewer and drainage considerations are considered. The Planner I will synthesize sewer and drainage technical analysis, summarize land use policy, and develop presentation and communication materials for senior staff, internal stakeholders, external stakeholders, Council, and the public.

**Specific Duties and Responsibilities**
- Researches, analyzes and reports out on best practices related to integrated rainwater management and the fields of rainwater management, ecology, biology, soil and plant science, habitat, biodiversity and ecosystem service concepts
- Prepares reports and technical memos and presentation materials to support policy development, watershed plans, conceptual designs and engagement,
- Provides leadership, forward thinking environmental science/ecology planning, and facilitates a team of highly motivated, inter-disciplinary professionals towards a common plan.
- Provides leadership in coordinating and communicating with internal and external partners and stakeholders which may include Aboriginal communities, regional, provincial and federal governments, environmental non-governmental organizations, home builders’ associations, professional associations, trade associations, urban development institute and the public
- Develops, coordinates and implements an engagement strategy for One Water initiatives and monitors its effectiveness
- Supervises junior branch staff
- Develops RFP/RFQ scopes of work and manages consultant contracts
- Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

**Qualifications**

Education and Experience:

- University degree in Planning recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners and a minimum of two years’ experience as a planning professional, preferably supplemented by supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Municipal experience in land use planning, sustainability/resilience planning and/or environmental planning

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Considerable knowledge of integrated water management and green infrastructure planning, design, construction and operations and urban landscape design principles.
- Working knowledge of the City’s Rain City Strategy
- Good knowledge and understanding of governmental structures and systems.
- Ability to project manage with strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to deal effectively with multiple tasks of moderate complexity and setting and meeting competing deadlines
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships at all levels in the organization and external stakeholders
- Ability to deliver education, training and/or capacity building programs
- Excellent supervisory and leadership skills with the ability to motivate and engage staff
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to build consensus on challenging issues and develop partnerships
- Ability to work independently and to provide professional interdisciplinary advice and technical guidance while functioning effectively in a team environment
