The Niagara Falls Public Library (NFPL) delivers the TD Summer Reading Club, Canada’s biggest, bilingual summer reading program for kids of all ages, all interests, and all abilities. The goals of this program are to encourage a love of books and learning to combat summer slide so that kids return to school in the fall ready and able to learn. The Summer Reading Student will offer support for our Summer Reading Club and with library and outreach programs. The student will gain valuable experience working with pre-school and school aged children, an understanding of community development principles in service delivery, and training in early literacy programming.

**Description of tasks**:
Assisting Librarians and regular programming staff in a variety of Summer Reading Club activities at library locations, including preschool storytimes for children ages 0-5, and school age programs for youth ages 5-18.

Assisting programming staff in outreach events including child care centres, day camps and public parks.

Enrolling children in the Summer Reading Club, distributing log books and other registration items, distributing earned book beads.

Bringing books to outreach locations for children to read over the week and helping children select books and develop enthusiasm for reading.

Delivering child friendly, short presentations at each outreach visit.

Transporting, setting up, and guiding kids and families through Storywalk installations of children’s picture books in both English and French.

Publicizing Summer Reading Club and Niagara Storywalks at outreach locations.

Keeping track of statistics for Summer Reading Club participants at outreach locations and reporting them.

Assisting with implementation of the program in an enthusiastic and confident manner.

Using equipment such as a computer, photocopier, iPad.

Other duties as assigned.

**Requirements**:

- A valid G-class license
- A Vulnerable Sector Check current to within 6 months is also required.

Canada Summer Jobs Grant eligibility requirements:

- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
