Settlement Support Mentor
Imagine moving to another country where language and customs are foreign to you. What a difference it would make to know someone locally who could “show you the ropes”.
Be part of Edmonton’s welcoming community by volunteering through our Cultural Links Program, and be matched with newly arrived immigrants or refugees
By being matched you become a link to our community. Each link helps newcomers feel this is a place they can call home. The relationship between the Canadian volunteer and the newcomer is based on friendship, equality, and respect for each other’s beliefs, culture and customs.
In welcoming a newcomer by volunteering through our Cultural Links Program, you will be sharing daily activities with them and helping them to:
- discover more about the Edmonton community
- improve their conversational English
- learn about community culture
- expand their network of social contacts
**Desired skills and qualifications**:
- Mature adult, age 20+
- Fluency in English
- Resident of Edmonton for a minimum of 1 year
- Good knowledge of Edmonton area community resources
- Ability to work independently in the community
- Ability to build new relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
- Respectful attitude towards people from diverse cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds
- Willingness to promote a positive view of Canada and Canadian life
- Speaking languages other than English is not mandatory but will be considered an asset (e.g. Arabic, Somali, Amharic, Tigrinya, Spanish, Swahili etc.) as well as cultural competency.
**Location**: Community Based
**Term**: 6 months to 1 year
**Time requirement**: 10 to 15 hours per month (flexible schedule)
