You have an understanding of law and are customer service driven, You are able to gather, analyze and assess information given to you by Legal Aid Alberta clients, which will become the file summary to the lawyer who will determine the appropriate service eligibility.

**Job Description**:
Reporting to the Manager, Legal Assessment Team, some of the key responsibilities include:

- Professionally and efficiently interact with clients who are seeking services from LAA to complete a comprehensive client assessment to assist in determining service eligibility with respect to family law
- Assign lawyers to client files that have been approved for coverage, considering defined business rules
- Maintains various tracking documents and recording of file statistics
- Perform client status eligibility updates and complete summary recommendations for lawyers to determine continuation or termination of client coverage in all areas of law
- Review and recommend approvals or rejections of lawyer authorization requests with respect to criminal, family, civil and immigration law
- May be required to create a standard monthly payment plan upon initial contact for new and existing client as applicable based on established guidelines
- May be required to perform basic conflict checks and provide results to the assessment team lawyers for further review and investigation
- Participates in one-on one, performance, staff meetings and training as required
- Performs other duties as assigned

**Qualifications**:
**Education and Experience**:

- Post-secondary Legal Assistant diploma is preferred
- Minimum 2 years’ experience with family law
- Experience interacting / interviewing clients to efficiently obtain the necessary information to complete a file summary

**Knowledge and Skills**:

- Broad knowledge of Family Law procedures and terminology
- Working knowledge of Criminal, Civil and Immigration Law procedures and terminology
- Knowledge of Legal Aid Alberta Rules, Board and Administrative Policies
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively by active listening, questioning and reading to obtain relevant information; to communicate positive or negative information both verbally and in writing, in a tactful and empathetic manner, to internal and external audiences
- Demonstrated ability to utilize effective and efficient call flow techniques to skillfully gather required information
- Ability to adapt and work efficiently in a high volume fast-paced work environment
- Ability to work in a team environment demonstrating flexibility and assertiveness
- Ability to work without close supervision, and take initiative
- Strong sense of responsibility and ability to exercise good judgment
- Must be motivated to learn and develop
- Good use of conflict resolution skills, communication skills, problem solving skills
