Control Systems Specialist

Trans Mountain operates Canada’s only pipeline system transporting oil products to the West Coast. We deliver approximately 300,000 barrels of petroleum products each day through 1,150 kilometres of pipeline in Alberta and British Columbia, and 111 kilometres of pipeline in Washington state.

As a Control Systems Specialist with Trans Mountain, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a progressive and fast-paced group of experts in the Technical Services department.
Reporting to the Supervisor Control Systems, the Control Systems Specialist will provide technical support for Industrial Control Systems (ICS), engineering direction and design, and project management related to ICS systems and programming on the Trans Mountain and Puget Sound pipeline systems. The preferred location for this role is Burnaby, BC.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Ensure safe and reliable operability of all control systems and connected facility equipment.
- Responsible for initiating, planning, executing, monitoring/controlling and closing capital and operating projects (up to $2M).
- Responsible for project management including overall project budgets, including expenditure authorization and forecasting responsibilities.
- Providing technical expertise in developing, testing, implementing, and maintaining pipeline control and monitoring strategies including equipment configuration and programming at terminal, pump station, and block valve/pig trap facilities:
- Rockwell Automation (RA) ControlLogix, CompactLogix series PLCs and I/O and some 1771 series I/O). RA HMI including RSView32 and FTViewSE and network distributed,
- Industrial Networking including Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, MODBUS, cellular, and other wireless and serial communication links.
- Custody transfer and leak detection metering including OMNI and Willowglen flow computers.
- Instrumentation and electrical systems including protective relays, analytical equipment, sampling systems, protective devices, and others.
- Creates, reviews, and approves ICS related drawings and technical documentation including cause and effect keys, control narratives, standards, specifications, and other technical references.
- Supports external and internal clients including Shipper Services, SCADA, Measurement and Quality, Control Center Operations (CCO), Local Operations and Maintenance (O&M), Information Technology (IT), Engineering, and others.
- Identifies and evaluates new technologies, methods and industry trends for incorporation into operating and maintenance practices.
**Qualifications and Professional Experience**
- A degree in Engineering with Electrical or Process Control; or a Diploma of Technology in Automation, Instrumentation, Electrical or Computer; or a Journeymen Electrician or Instrumentation is required.
- A minimum of 10 years of direct experience with ICS based on RA solutions.
- Preferably on hydrocarbon liquids pipelines.
- Previous Pipeline and/or Facility engineering experience is required.
- Must have proven ability in industrial controls, programming, automation, electrical/instrumentation, and process.
- Availability to be on call as part of an on-call rotation
- Must have strong technical writing skills.
- Project Management experience would be an asset.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Consistently demonstrate a cooperative and positive approach to problem solving and when helping others.
- Highly organized and detail orientated with strong time management and prioritization skills.
- High standard of initiative and strong work ethic.
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to change in a fast-paced environment.
