Analytical chemistry post-doctoral student research position

**Development of clinical chemistry LC-MS-MS assays**

Applications are invited for a 1-year post-doctoral fellowship position to develop clinical LC-MS-MS assays with the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP) HRLMP clinical mass spectrometry laboratories to develop one or more assays in the areas of**:newborn screening, biochemical genetics, toxicology, special chemistry**.

The HRLMP operates clinical laboratories for the hospitals in the Hamilton, Ontario region, in addition to offering reference laboratory services for Canada. In partnership with the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, McMaster University, The PDF will work within the Specific assays will be developed according to lab priorities and instrument and technical staff availability. Most PDFs would complete more than one assay development project during the year, depending on the complexity of the assay.

Development and clinical validation of ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) methods for clinical use

**Background**:
This is an excellent post-doctoral position for those seeking a career in clinical biochemistry.

Each assay will follow a similar project outline:

- Create a project plan based on literature review and clinical goals and order any needed chemicals.
- Develop and optimize the analytical method for LC-MS-MS.
- Clinically validate the method according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) protocols.
- Pilot test the method in a clinical setting.
- Disseminate the research (conference presentations, publications)

**Skills and Qualifications**:

- PhD or MD/PhD is required (completed prior to start date)
- Graduate degree should be in a field related to biochemical genetics, toxicology, or analytical chemistry
- Experience in some or all of the following techniques is required: mass spectrometry, spectrophotometry, liquid and gas chromatography, sample preparation (blood, urine) for biochemical analysis
- Experience in study design related to analytical method optimization and validation is preferred
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and results-driven
- Strong ability to take initiative and work independently, as well as in a team environment
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proven track record of publications in high quality journals required; some successful minor grant funding desirable
