The Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba (LGCA) regulates the province’s liquor, gaming and cannabis industries, including oversight for liquor sales, service and manufacturing; gaming employees, products, events and operations; and retail cannabis stores. We strive to serve the public interest by regulating these industries in a respectful, impartial and balanced manner.

The LGCA is seeking a highly motivated research student interested in conducting research examining alcohol and cannabis use during pregnancy to help inform public education materials related to the LGCA’s regulatory and social responsibility mandate. This position is part of the Policy and Research Department and is responsible for assisting with research activities for this project.

**Qualifications**:

- A high school diploma and be currently enrolled in a degree program at a post-secondary institution, preferably at graduate level with a focused area of study in health, social sciences, or a related discipline and at least two to three years of research experience at the post-secondary level.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience using academic databases (i.e., JSTOR, Google Scholar, EBSCOhost) to conduct literature reviews and environmental scans.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work with others in a professional and respectful manner.
- Strong attention to detail, and knowledge of and adherence to ethical and academic research standards.
- Effective time management and organizational skills to manage multiple work demands.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Proficient computer skills and expertise using Microsoft 365.

**The following qualifications are desired**:

- Experience with statistical software packages such as SPSS and programming syntax would be an asset.
- Knowledge of social responsibility public education initiatives.
- Proficiency in French.

**Duties**:
As part of its research mandate, the LGCA conducts independent and collaborative research related to liquor, gambling, and cannabis. Recently, the LGCA has expanded its research program to enhance evidence-based public education to help Manitobans make lower-risk decisions related to the consumption of liquor and cannabis and participation in gambling. The Research Student will provide research support on a specific project examining alcohol and cannabis use during pregnancy. The student will be responsible for conducting a comprehensive review and analysis of existing quantitative, qualitative, and public health research to inform communications and public education materials for this project. The student will assist in writing reports and other related materials relevant to the project and ensure deliverables are understood by and meet the needs of a wide variety of audiences. Given the nature of the topic, sensitivity and political acumen are required.

**Additional Information**:

- An eligibility list may be created for similar positions and will remain in effect for 12 months.
