We are currently recruiting for (1) Parks Accessibility Planning Summer Student position based out of Truro. The earliest start date will be May 1 ,2023, with an anticipated end date of August 18, 2023.

**About Our Opportunity**:
Need a summer job but don’t want to spend all day behind a desk inside? Nova Scotia Parks is seeking a post-secondary student to assist the Parks and Outreach Division of NRR in the planning and design of accessible infrastructure within the Provincial Parks system.

**Primary Accountabilities**:
We are looking for a university or college student to assist the Parks Division in the development and implementation of a truly accessible camping experience in the Province’s 20 Campground Parks. As a Parks Accessibility Student, you will work with the park planner, engineer, landscape architect, and other designers, to help:

- Develop an accessible campsite design standard to be implemented within the Provincial campgrounds
- Assess campsite suitability in our 20 camping parks throughout Nova Scotia for an accessible camping experience by visiting each of the Provincial campground parks and conducting an in-field suitability analysis for an accessible campsite location
- Prepare a written report describing the modifications required in each of the 20 campgrounds necessary in providing an accessible campsite, including proposed campsite location, scaled site layout and site design drawings for accessible campsite infrastructure. The report will also describe other major park constraints that would need to be addressed in providing a positive accessible camping experience within each campground
- Oversee the construction of an accessible campsite development project
- Prepare a jurisdictional review of how other provincial, federal and state operated campgrounds manage the reservation and booking of accessible campsites within camping parks.

You will report to the Landscape Architect, in Truro, where work is focused on the provincial parks program. Some office time will be required but, largely, you will be required to travel throughout the province, visiting the different provincial campgrounds and conducting assessments. Majority of time, you will be expected to work in a team environment but also some independent work will be required. You must enjoy working out of doors, in the parks, rain or shine.

**Qualifications and Experience**:
To be successful in this role:

- You are a full-time, second, or third-year, university or college student enrolled in any of the design fields of planning, architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, outdoor recreation, occupational health, or other related discipline and returning to studies in the fall of 2023.
- You have strong verbal and written communication and analytical skills, in addition to design, as the work requires the preparation of written technical reports and supporting documents. You must have strong organizational skills and problem-solving ability.
- You are comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, taking the initiative to manage your own work and field trips and happy to work in the outdoors much of the time.
- The position requires you have a valid driver’s license.
- Employees are expected to provide their own safety boots.

Additional attributes considered an asset in position evaluation include demonstration of:

- Experience using AutoCAD or other design / drafting software
- Knowledge of the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification Program
- Knowledge of the Nova Scotia Accessibility Act
- Experience using GPS equipment and software for navigation and data capture, data management, GIS software (ArcGIS),
- Knowledge of with local area geography of Nova Scotia
- Knowledge of the Provincial Park system and camping in general
- Standard first aid.

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

**Working Conditions**:
Some office time will be required but, largely, you will be required to travel throughout the province, visiting the different provincial camp
