Overview
The Outreach Specialist works with the Executive Director and the NSBA team to promote the
industry, especially career opportunities in the industry. The Outreach Specialist works with
students, job seekers, NSBA members, the public, key stakeholders, and potential customers.
Duties & Responsibilities
Note: This position requires the ability to work both independently and cooperatively, as many
of the duties described interconnect with work being done by other NSBA team members.
School and Community Engagement (>50% of the time):
- Develop, coordinate, and deliver career presentations and interactive workshops for
schools and other audiences around Nova Scotia and occasionally other Maritime provinces,
including pre-and post-activity assessments to measure impact.
- Participate in career fairs and related events.
- Develop/maintain partnerships with other organizations involved in career awareness.
- Develop summer programming to continue community engagement between school years;
this may include summer camps or partnering with groups like sailing schools.
- Note: Activities may include 3-5 day boatbuilding workshops/camps. Boatbuilding
expertise is not required, but familiarity with hand and power tools is important.
General Public Relations / Communications Activities:
Support the Communications Specialist as follows:
- Help update and develop new promotional material as needed using resources in the
NSBA’s multimedia asset library; key objectives include:
- Attracting new workers to the industry and highlighting industry career pathways.
- Promoting a people-centered workplace culture where employees feel physically and
psychologically safe.

- Monitor social media, respond to simple inquiries, and escalate any controversial
engagement to a senior NSBA team member as needed.
- Monitor and provide summary data reports of social media activity.
Cross-Project Support:
Support other team members on projects where appropriate, such as:
- The development of industry-specific micro-credentials and the development and promotion
of an Employer of Choice program (if funded).
- Help with survey data collection.
Administration:
- Maintain clear records of outreach activities, including participant statistics.
- Prepare and submit activity and financial reports to the Executive Director as required.
- Keep records of expenses and provide these to the bookkeeper if needed.
**Working Conditions**
A significant portion of work is computer-based, but duties include travel and other activities in
a variety of settings. The NSBA’s small team works closely together, virtually and in person. There is flexibility in work location and scheduling, but employees must be accessible during regular working hours. Employees are encouraged to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
Extended periods of computer work are common. A high degree of sensory input is common
in youth-oriented activities as well as other outreach activities. Exposure to noise, dust, and
chemical smells is common as part of industry site visits and offering workshops or youth
camps. Industry site visits may involve stairs and other structures that require good physical
mobility.
Travel conditions may include long periods of driving and transporting personal luggage and
supplies. Attendance at meetings of varying duration is also required. Normal working hours
are 8 hours per day, 5 days per week but there is flexibility to accommodate travel schedules
and personal preferences. On travel days, work may extend beyond 8 hours per day but this time is balanced with schedule adjustments or provided as time in lieu. Weekend work is rare
but may be required for boat shows and conferences or other purposes.
Travel Demands:
- Travel to schools, primarily in NS, and to other sites for outreach activities;
- Some industry site visits within NS and other Maritime provinces to learn about the local
boatbuilding and marine repair industry and to build relationships with NSBA members;
- Occasional travel outside Nova Scotia for activities such as boat shows and conferences.
