**Summary**

Reporting to the General Manager, the Controller will be responsible for the effective oversight of the financial operations of Fanshawe Student Union. The Controller will provide accurate information to the General Manager, including analysis, budgeting, forecasting and preparation of financial reports and statements, and will be responsible for directing and managing the company's accounting functions, including establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures.

The Controller will be responsible for overseeing an accounting team that includes accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, budget management, and regulatory financial reporting. This position will have accountability for budget preparation, coordination of the year-end audit, maintenance of internal control procedures, preparation of monthly finance statements, and the preparation/review of monthly general ledger reconciliations for all G/L accounts.

The Controller will review, analyze, and ensure compliance for government filings while remaining current with all federal, provincial, and other regulatory requirements. With an attention to detail, the Controller will review and update any financial policies and procedures while maintaining all company accounting systems.

**Job Duties**
- Oversee the accounting operations including the review of journal entries, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and statutory reporting
- Establish and monitor internal controls to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal regulatory and company policies and procedures
- Set the priorities within the Accounting team, ensuring staffing support, training, mentoring, and oversee employee performance
- Support the Accounting/Payroll Officer with bi-weekly Payroll as needed
- Ensures rapid and consistent collection of receivables by refining and implementing control mechanisms
- Responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial information
- Provides advice and guidance on all accounting matters including financial systems, record keeping, analysis, and reporting
- Provide strategic analysis as required to drive improved financial decision making
- In conjunction with the General Manager, manage the budgeting and forecasting process
- Define, measure, analyze, improve and control current processes which impact and influence internal financial operating efficiency
- Work with the Accounting/Payroll Officer to prepare, analyze and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial operating results for each department
- Review/audit internal and external contracts and invoices submitted, to ensure accuracy and follow-up as necessary with the appropriate Manager
- Review/audit all other financial reporting to various companies and agencies (e.g. Insurance, Statistics Canada, etc.) as necessary
- Oversee the generation of the monthly College Fee Reconciliation report, and review with the General Manager
- Liaise with the accounting team monthly to reconcile and submit reports on the FSU current accounts to the General Manager
- Oversee/audit the general ledger accounts in conjunction with appropriate Managers
- Review with appropriate Managers monthly reports of performance against budgets
- Work with appropriate department leaders on product pricing, costing, and margins
- Oversee the year-end audit in the planning and preparation of audited financial statements, working with external auditors, General Manager, and other FSU Staff
- Support new systems or project selections and implementation from a strategic finance and internal control perspective
- Manage any foreign exchange transactions
- Promote and maintain positive relations with the community and College
- Other related duties and required or assigned

**Requirements**:

- Relevant degree/diploma in Business, Finance, or Accounting required
- Professional accounting designation (such as CA, CPA, CGA, CMA) preferred
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in business accounting
- 5 years in a financial leadership role
- Experience in not-for-profit accounting practices is an asset
- Thorough knowledge of all relevant Federal, Provincial and local requirements regarding financial records, pension, and the like is essential
- Experience overseeing audits performed by external audit firms
- Knowledge of budget preparation and analysis techniques
- Financial analysis, budgeting, and strategic planning experience
- Experience with Ceridian Dayforce and Simply Accounting an asset
- Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity with standard accounting software packages
- Advanced knowledge of MS Office and Excel
- Superior interpersonal and organizational skills, strong team management skills, independent decision making, and time management skills
- Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, generations, and abilities
