Oshawa, Canada The Back Door Mission for the Relief of Poverty Full time

Peer support is emotional and practical support between two people who share a common experience. The Peer Support Worker has the role of promoting the safety and comfort of Mission United service users by providing non-judgmental, experience-based oversight, support, and guidance. The Peer Support Worker will provide flexible and tailored support based on each service user’s needs, including advocating for their wellbeing, building trust-based relationships, and using experience-based knowledge to guide them to a plan of stabilization.

The Back Door Mission works to relieve the burdens of poverty and social dislocation within the economically deprived and street population of Oshawa. Originally a drop-in centre, the Back Door Mission has expanded its services since the COVID-19 pandemic and is currently operating Mission United.

The responsibilities and minimum qualifications for this position are as follows:
**Responsibilities**
- Welcome and connect with individuals accessing Mission United services.
- Provide clients with mentorship, emotional support, and system navigation.
- Assist with problem solving, goal setting, crisis/risk assessment, and referrals to other community supports.
- Work collaboratively with Mission United, and community service providers to support client-focused recovery plans.
- Participate in daily meetings with Mission United team members and provide valuable client updates.
- Lead and participate in peer support groups.
- Assist in planning and facilitation of client support and engagement groups.
- Monitor client behavior, schedule, medication compliance, and activities.
- Communicate any recovery/stabilization plan deviations to Mission United team.
- Utilize trauma-informed approaches that promote personal growth and self-responsibility.
- Engage with the community in a manner consistent with Back Door Mission’s values and code of conduct.

**Qualifications**
- Relevant training and/or experience as a Peer Support Specialist or similar.
- Post-secondary education is considered an asset, but not required.
- Lived experience, with demonstrated stabilization for a minimum of 2 years.
- Highly compassionate and attentive to details.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and ability to complete daily tracking.
- Ability to maintain a positive, professional, and non-judgmental environment.
- Strong problem-solving and crisis/risk assessment skills.
- Understanding and experience with both harm reduction and abstinence-based recovery models.
- Strong de-escalation and crisis management skills.
- Must be willing to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Police check, however, please note that the existence of a criminal record will preclude an individual from employment.
- CPR/First Aid Certification is considered an asset.
