Position Overview
Responsible for a servicing team and specialized technical assignments, participating in the budget and planning processes of the Union; and coordinating, supervising and providing leadership to a team of Officers, other staff and/or BCNU stewards or members.
Key Responsibilities
1. Responsible for a specialized technical assignment, reporting to and advising the Managers, Labour Relations, and the Director, Legal and Labour Relations, and advising the BCNU Council on their area of technical expertise when requested.
a) Assumes the primary leadership role in the area(s) they have been assigned and is responsible for the effective and efficient overall functioning of their assigned area(s), specialties, staff and budget.
**Assignments may include, but are not limited to**:
- Working closely with the Managers and Directors in creating an overall organizing strategy and plan for BCNU, including operational, implementation and communications strategies involving all roleholders.
- Participating in bargaining and negotiations.
- Chairing committees, coordinating IWADs and SEPDs and representing BCNU at the Labour Board.
b) Responsible for their own technical assignment and coordinating and supervising Officers/ Stewards/ Members involved in those areas. Particulars of the specialized technical assignments may change over time.
c) Develops and manages relationships with external health providers and facilities to ensure effective representation of BCNU members.
2. Participates in the budget and planning processes of the Union.
a) Makes recommendations to Managers and Director(s) on budget items and staffing levels for the annual budget.
b) May participate with the BCNU Council in annual strategic planning, assist and advise the Managers and Directors on the annual operations plans.
3. Coordinates, supervises, and provides leadership to a team of Officers, other staff and BCNU Stewards or Members to address and function BCNU’s initiatives in an effective and timely manner.
a) Responsible for their own technical assignment and coordinating, supervising, and providing leadership to Officers, administrative staff and BCNU Stewards or Members involved in those areas. This includes strategizing with team members on the most effective way to address membership issues through grievance, arbitration, campaigns; providing contract interpretation advice.
b) Develops work objectives, establishes guidelines and standards, identifies required improvements, and incorporates improvements.
c) Orientation and monitoring of new department hires, and development of individual work plans based on organizational and departmental priorities. Provides feedback regularly and evaluates performance.
d) Assesses workloads and adjusts assignments within the team; requests relief staffing when needed.
e) Monitors and assesses work performance, caseloads, and response timelines, develops work and education plans and reports problems and solutions to the Managers and Director(s); responds to BCNU member complaints about team members.
f) Coordinates vacation, leave requests and resolves scheduling conflicts within the team. Coordinators are responsible for resolving issues consistent with BCNU policies and guidelines and in consultation with the Managers and Director(s). Coordinators may initiate progressive discipline measures if required and will communicate with the Managers and/or Director(s) regarding such.
g) May participate in the selection process.
h) Works closely with the Managers and Director(s) to develop and mentor staff, full-time stewards, and other key positions within the BCNU membership.
4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

**Qualifications**:
**The successful applicant must have**:
- College or university education in an approved Social Science, Industrial Relations and/or Nursing program or an equivalent combination of education and experience as described below.
- Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for coordinating, supervising and providing leadership to a team of professional and administrative staff. Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring teams. Supervisory skills with formal training an asset.
