The Research Analyst’s primary responsibility is to conduct high-quality research on individuals, corporations and foundations and, based on the results of their research, provide an analytical and strategic written recommendation about the constituent’s capacity and willingness to be a donor to the University. Research techniques involve database manipulation and complex queries, as well as online research tools and databases. The type of data researched includes information about real estate, stocks and bonds, salary and other indicators of wealth.

The Research Analyst may calculate and provide a target gift amount to senior staff of the Development Office, to staff in other sectors within External Relations including the Vice-President, other senior officials of the University such as Deans, and occasionally external groups (i.e. communication with alumni to validate research results and communication with external research sources such as libraries, stock brokers, real estate agents and government information specialists).

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Prospect Research

Uses proactive research techniques to identify and research potential individual, corporate and foundation prospective donors (targeting $25,000) or volunteers for the capital campaign, major gift solicitation or involvement in university activities using various print sources, online tools and databases and library databases, Raiser’s Edge database queries and advanced research techniques.

Determines willingness to give of prospective donors through analysis of Raiser’s Edge database (e.g.: previous gifts, attendance at past events, etc.) as well as online databases and internet searches for other philanthropic gifts.

Determines capacity to give using online tools, databases and advanced research techniques and analyses real estate information, stocks and bonds, salary and any other wealth indicators to calculate and provide an estimated target gift amount.

Works closely with the development team to determine readiness by updating research profiles after receiving information from development after a visit with the prospective donor.

Provides an analytical and strategic recommendation based on the results of their research.

Develops prospect lists of potential donors that relate directly to campaign and faculty goals and that can be used for visits within Canada, the US and other International destinations by the Vice-President, Director of Development, senior development and faculty staff.

Research Requests

In response to research requests from the Vice President of External Relations, Faculty Development Officers, Director of Alumni Relations, and senior staff such as Deans and Assistant Directors, researches and synthesizes information and writes concise formal profiles and informal research notes within set timelines by reviewing current information in the databases and by consulting various research resources and tools.

Research requests can include research on prospective donors, current donors, potential DCLA (Distinguished Canadian Leadership Award) and Honorary Doctorate recipients, newly elected officials who are alumni and profiling event attendees and speakers, such as at Homecoming. Other types of research requests are alumni identification and confirmation through media sources in addition to verifying major national lists such as election results and Who’s Who to identify alumni.

Research completes requests from Media Relations to support the communication goals of the University.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS- Master’s degree in library science or information management, or equivalent education or work experience;- Minimum one year of prospect research and fundraising experience, preferably in a capital campaign; knowledge of fundraising principles and practices, and the Canadian fundraising environment.- Ability to synthesize and analyze financial data, reports and wealth indicators; experience using and interpreting corporate financial documents preferred.- Strong knowledge of Internet search engines and other print and internet resources and tools pertaining to prosipect research.- Strong computers skills (word processing and database manipulation) and ability to learn new systems quickly. Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a strong asset.- Has a strong sense of initiative and organization, attention to detail, and works well under pressure.- Working knowledge of French and English, with fluency (written, comprehension and spoken) in at least
