We are looking for a Technical Officer, Material Analyst to support our Construction Research Centre. The Technical Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.
NRC Construction is implementing the “Platform to Decarbonize the Construction Sector at Scale” to accelerate and scale up new technologies to help transition the Canadian construction sector towards decarbonization and contribute to the emerging low-carbon economy. It will also establish new codes, standards, specifications, and guidelines to position the sector to achieve its 2050 greenhouse gas (GHG) carbon reduction targets. These investments will help spur the growth of Canada’s clean technology sector and help achieve Canada’s international commitments to reduce GHG emissions.
As the Technical Officer, Material Analyst, your main responsibilities will be to:
- Provide practical laboratory expertise in the thermal analysis, spectroscopy, rheology, and accelerated aging of construction materials for the Construction Research Centre (CRC), and the Facades Systems and Products (FSP) group in particular.
- Use and maintain laboratories with a range of sophisticated instruments to undertake material characterization and analysis, in addition to several types of environmental chambers for accelerated aging of construction materials.
- Help with the hands-on development and advancement of novel methods and of analysis.
- Collaborate with researchers in the conception, planning, and execution of research projects for clients internal and external to the CRC.
- Contribute to contractual work, research and development, results interpretation, and participate in the transfer of technology to industry with contributions in the writing of technical/client reports, technical papers, manuscripts, and presentation of research results.

**Education**:
A Bachelor degree in chemistry, polymer science/engineering, material science/engineering or other discipline related to the position.
An equivalent combination of related experience, training and education may be considered.

**Experience**:
To be considered for the position, the applicant must have demonstrated practical experience in sample preparation, setting up the test/experiment and conduct analysis in at least one of the following methods:
Thermal analysis:
- Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry
- High-resolution Thermogravimetric Analysis
Or Rheology:
- Dynamic Mechanical Analysis
- Dynamic Shear Rheology
Or Spectroscopy:
- Infrared spectroscopy
- Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy
- Raman spectroscopy
The following will be considered as assets:
- Knowledge of advanced statistical methods of analysis, and data analysis tools such as MATLAB, R, or Python.
- Design of experiments.
- Strong computer skills; and the ability to use MS Office Suite.

- Theoretical and practical knowledge of thermal analysis, spectroscopy and rheology of materials, specifically construction materials.
- Practical knowledge of materials chemistry/structure and properties with a strong emphasis on construction materials.
- Practical and strong knowledge of preparing the work site and test setup and conducting tests related to materials.
- Knowledge of collecting data, documenting and interpreting test results, analysis and report writing.
- Ability to accurately interpret technical direction from a variety of sources including engineering drawings, industry standards and standardized procedures.

Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with the NRC's directives.
**Compensation**:
From $58,445 to $80,040 per annum.
