MASc and PhD Positions at the ACM Lab, Dalhousie University 6 days ago  Be among the first 25 applicants Research Project Title: Advanced Control of Electric Vehicle Powertrain Position: PhD/MASc Candidate Supervisor: Prof. Ya-Jun Pan, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering at Dalhousie University, Halifax POSITION OVERVIEW We are seeking a research student to work on the advanced control of electric vehicle powertrain. The student will establish a dynamic model of the electric vehicle powertrain, incorporate it into the control algorithm, and develop an innovative direct wheel‑torque control method. Experimental validation will be conducted based on an integrated magnetic‑geared motor. The work will take place primarily in the Advanced Control and Mechatronics Lab (ACM Lab http://acm.me.dal.ca) at Dalhousie University, which has state‑of‑the‑art equipment including robotic manipulators, mobile robots, quadcopters, motion capture system, haptic devices, autonomous sailboats, and mechatronic systems. The student may also work as a visiting research graduate student in the research group GRÉPCI at ÉTS, in a power electronics laboratory capable of testing converters under extreme temperatures and an electrical machine laboratory for motor testing. The PhD candidate will receive a comparable annual stipend (up to 2 years) supported by the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ). The student will be supported to attend at least one international conference, provided a conference paper is accepted. QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor and/or Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Background knowledge in one or more of the following areas: dynamic modeling, advanced control, electrical machine, finite element analysis, multi‑physics simulation. Technical writing skills for scientific publications. Communication skills in English. A problem‑solving oriented mindset, self‑motivation, initiative, resourcefulness, and dependability. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. For international students, a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 or TOEFL iBT score of 92 is required.
