Kinectrics is the Canadian leader in nuclear safety and licensing services. With one of the largest, and most experienced team of nuclear safety and licensing practitioners in the world, this is an exciting opportunity to join the team as we support the continued operation of the nuclear fleet and the build-out of new clean energy infrastructure globally.
Kinectrics has a growing portfolio of services supporting the development and deployment of nuclear facilities including new nuclear power plants, fuel cycle facilities, medical radioisotope production facilities, and other advanced technologies in Canada and around the world. Our reactor new build support includes services for Gigawatt-scale new build as well as Small Modular Reactors of all technology types. Kinectrics also has a diverse portfolio of services to support emerging nuclear technologies such as fusion facilities and related clean energy technologies such as hydrogen production. Additionally, the market continues to grow for large-scale nuclear new builds utilizing proven technologies from around the world.
A section under the Licensing & Advanced Reactor directorate has been established to lead the licensing efforts for various new build work programs. This includes support to reactor developers, and support to utilities who are seeking to deploy new nuclear projects. Specific scopes of work performed in the section include: preparation of documents for CNSC Vendor Design Reviews, execution of site evaluation activities and reporting for nuclear new build sites, authoring of preliminary safety analysis report (PSAR) chapters, preparation and/or review of licence applications and other key licensing basis documents, and preparation of licensing strategies for various clients. We are seeking multiple licensing experts to lead and execute projects in this exciting area of work.
Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact
Provide nuclear safety and licensing support to clients in the nuclear sector in the areas of Nuclear Siting, Environmental/Impact Assessments, Deterministic Safety Analysis, Probabilistic Safety Analysis, Operational Nuclear Safety, Emergency Preparedness, Nuclear Security, Regulatory Affairs and other related disciplines.
- Propose, plan, lead and/or conduct licensing projects
- Provide technical leadership and key capabilities in licensing projects
- Provide technical mentoring to junior staff
- Carry out work with a view to ensuring customer satisfaction
- Outline, assign and oversee the tasks of others on the team
- Support the development of proposals
- Prepare technical reports suitable for submission to clients and to nuclear regulators (for example, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission).
What You Need to Succeed
- Minimum of a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Engineering Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics or equivalent is required. Advanced specialized knowledge and education are an asset. Equivalent work experience, including military service will be considered.
- Minimum of fifteen years of relevant experience in the Nuclear Industry in roles that exhibited strong technical/team leadership, direct regulator engagement, and the preparation of new or novel licensing approaches.
- In-depth understanding of, and experience working in the Canadian regulatory framework and practical experience in working with Canadian regulatory requirements. Experience working in other nuclear jurisdictions is an asset.
- Experience preparing licence applications, licence compliance assessments, and the conduct of regulatory affairs activities.
- Experience interfacing with the CNSC and other applicable regulators.
- Ability to lead complex technical work programs with a technical team.
- In-depth understanding of nuclear power plant design and operation, and its relation to the plant licensing basis.
- Fundamental or more advanced knowledge of water cooled and non-water-cooled reactor designs including advanced reactor types is an asset.
- Must be motivated by working with engineering professionals committed to producing timely and high-quality technical work.
- Must be able to organize and prioritize assigned work and to coordinate multiple activities efficiently.
- Flexible in terms of willingness to accept evolving assignments as current projects end and new projects begin.
- Candidates are expected to have or pursue attainment of the P.Eng. designation, if eligible.
