Geotechnical Engineering Technologist – Stantec Stantec is a leading provider of design, engineering, and consulting services that help deliver the critical minerals needed to power our world. Role Summary We are looking for a Geotechnical Engineering Technologist to work on a regular full‑time, rotational field basis in Calgary. The position is non‑exempt and involves on‑site operations, maintenance, and monitoring of earthen structures and civil earthwork projects. The role requires 12‑hour day/night shifts, remote travel, and work at remote field locations. Key Responsibilities Civil Field Technologist Responsibilities: Participate in site‑specific HSE policies, attend daily tailgate meetings, identify and report hazards, and encourage a safe work environment. Document significant events or observations (Environmental, Hazard ID, Job Observations, etc.). Monitor geotechnical parameters and provide quality control in accordance with design and testing specifications. Perform advanced soil sampling and compaction testing using a portable nuclear gauge. Interpret design and IFC drawings, material and construction specifications. Store, transport and maintain nuclear densometers. Develop understanding of radiation safety, policies and procedures. Report technical construction monitoring observations and results, and provide guidance during construction. Adhere to quality control, documentation and data management procedures. Contribute to standardized procedures and policies to achieve shared goals and objectives. Troubleshoot technical issues in the field and deliver high quality results. Demonstrate proficiency in the competencies outlined in the Core Competency Profile. Operate light vehicles (4x4 pickups) and/or all‑terrain vehicles to access construction areas. Engage with key stakeholders to gather information and background. Instrumentation Monitor Responsibilities: Participate in site‑specific HSE policies, attend daily tailgate meetings, identify and report hazards, and promote a safe work environment. Commission, initialize, extend, lower, and assist in decommissioning/abandoning geotechnical and hydrogeological instruments and wells. Take readings from vibrating wire piezometers, pneumatic piezometers, standpipes, transducers, flow meters and pumping wells. Maintain observation instruments, perform winterization, and address maintenance tasks such as removing water from slope inclinometers or repairing casing caps. Program, install and download data from data loggers. Perform QC of all readings, data entry, and determine if re‑reads are required. Conduct standard hydrogeological field testing on pumping and monitoring wells. Collect water samples from monitoring wells, pumping wells, and surface infrastructure. Enter, maintain and update instrumentation data files and drawings. Operating light vehicles (4x4 pickups) or all‑terrain vehicles to access remote instrumentation areas. Engage with key stakeholders to gather information and background. Materials Testing Technician Responsibilities: Participate in HSE policies, attend daily tailgate meetings, identify and report hazards. Document significant events or observations (Environmental, Hazard ID, Job Observations, etc.). Maintain, clean and replace lab equipment. Ensure tests conform to relevant standards (ASTM D4643, D422, D1556, D2487, D698, D1557). Maintain chain‑of‑custody of all samples from receipt to disposal. Log and upload sampling results to the client’s database. Receive, schedule, and complete tests with timely updates to the client. Demonstrate proficiency in the Core Competency Profile. Show extensive experience with northern Alberta glacial geology and Athabasca Oil Sands Geology. Operate light vehicles (4x4 pickups) or all‑terrain vehicles to access remote areas. Engage with key stakeholders to gather information and background. Qualifications & Capabilities Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with current Driver’s Abstract. Standard First Aid Level C with AED, CSTS, and H2S Alive. Pre‑access drug and alcohol testing and criminal background check required. Additional qualification requirements may apply depending on the project. Education & Experience Minimum Post‑Secondary Technical Diploma in geological, geotechnical, civil, or mining disciplines. Minimum 1 year of relevant industry experience, including mine driving considered an asset. Professional designation with ASET or ASTTBC is an asset. Additional qualifications may be required depending on the project. Physical Requirements The position has minimum physical duties outlined in Stantec’s Field Physical Demands Assessment, and requires travel to and from remote field locations.
