What do you offer?

The Neighbourhood Day Camp Counsellor implements and facilitates the delivery of quality recreational programs, services, and experiences to children and youth aged 4 to 16 enrolled in Neighbourhood Day Camp programs. The Camp Counsellor functions as part of a team tasked with supervising program participants as they engage in outdoor activities, discover nature and enjoy the natural environment, build self-confidence and establish lasting friendships.

Wage:$16.55/hour

Positions available at various locations across the city such as:

  • Taggart Family Y
  • Nepean (Barrhaven)
  • Clarence-Rockland Y
  • Stittsville
  • Kanata

Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Leading and participating in all programs.
  • Actively supervising assigned campers.
  • Delivering programming based on skill level and age of participants.
  • Completing all necessary paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Being responsible for the safety and security of all participants.
  • Developing and maintaining an open, constructive and professional relationship with program participants, caregivers, volunteers, co-workers and supervisors.

The successful candidate will have the following:

Language

  • Ability to work in English
  • Bilingualism is an asset

Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • Standard First Aid and CPR “C” or equivalent
  • 1-2 years’ experience working in an outdoor education or camping environment
  • Previous experience in the development and implementation of new programs and services
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with program participants, members, staff and volunteers
  • Experience working in a socially inclusive environment, responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity
  • A sound knowledge of child development

Additional Requirements

  • Must be 15 years old by June 24, 2024.
  • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • A Police Record check, not more than 6 months old is required.Police Records checks are reviewed on an individual basis and the offense(s) - if any - is considered in the decision-making process in relation to the requirement of working with children, therefore not eliminating all candidates with a record from being offered a position.
  • Semi-annually, staff must complete the mandatory training for the protection of Children & Youth and submit the certificate of completion.
