This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Iqaluit only.ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Director Corrections, the Deputy Director Corrections will be accountable for the design, development, coordination and evaluation of policies and programs for adults and youth in conflict with the law overseeing the assessment of all staff correctional training requirements, and plans and managing the development, scheduling, delivery and evaluation of pertinent training and development programs, initiatives and activities. This position requires an awareness of the full continuum of correctional inmate service delivery through integrated case management, focusing primarily on pre-release and community supervision.Contributing to the development of legislation and policies for corrections programs which are compatible with the goals and objectives of the Government of Nunavut.Planning, drafting and recommending policies and programs, establishing and monitoring standards, coordinating program delivery and evaluating correctional programs and facilities to provide regulated levels of inmate management, supervision and security for adult and young inmates.Providing guidance and direction to Wardens in the effective day-to-day operations of their facility.Providing technical expertise in the interpretation of related legislation and policies (e.g. Criminal Code of Canada, Prisons and Reformatories Act, Human Rights Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and Corrections Act, Nursing Act, Emergency Medical Aid Act, Mental Health Act, Pharmacy Act, Public Service Act, Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Territorial Safety Acts and Legislation, etc.).Developing and implementing effective budget controls and managing the budget in accordance with the requirements of related legislation (e.g. Financial Administration Act) and departmental policy.Managing and overseeing the activities of the Correctional training and development section to ensure staff competencies are maintained.Implementing career laddering opportunities, training plans and liaising with HR Sivumuaqatigiit division for the development of internship opportunities for Inuit workforce.Promoting a safe, collaborative and healthy workplace and models Inuit Societal Values.Having delegated authority to represent the interests of the Corrections Division at inter-governmental, interdepartmental, national meetings during the Directors’ absence.QualificationsThe knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a bachelor’s degree in social sciences or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution. Seven (7) years of responsible and progressive corrections-related and/or other justice-related experience, including a minimum of 4 years of progressive managerial experience within a correctional facility.This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in one or more of Nunavut’s official languages is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered for this position.
