Position Overview The Energy and Climate Change Specialist supports the Senior Manager, Policy Planning and Special Programs in leading the planning and implementation of municipal energy and climate change priorities related to Green Directions Vaughan 2019, the Municipal Energy Plan, and community energy planning. The role involves advising, tracking, updating and/or leading initiatives for city‑related climate adaptation, mitigation, greenhouse gas reductions and energy projects; providing expertise and guidance to staff, City Council, stakeholders and the community; conducting related research; assisting with program and policy development; and preparing reports on complex energy and climate change issues, including integration of climate change with land use planning studies (e.g., community energy plans). Establishing and fostering partnerships with other levels of government, community groups, business associations and non‑government organizations is critical to advancing climate action in city operations and the community. Qualifications and Experience University degree in environmental sustainability or related field (Environmental Sciences, Environmental Management, Planning, Engineering, etc.). Minimum of five (5) years of experience in sustainability, climate change, environment, energy management, or related fields. Strategic climate change action planning and partnership development in a municipal setting is an asset. Familiarity with energy management principles, building automation systems, benchmarking initiatives and relevant legislation such as the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Ontario Building Code, Municipal Act, etc. Knowledge of provincial and federal climate change policies (e.g., Climate Change Mitigation and Low‑Carbon Economy Act, Ontario Climate Change Action Plan) and related grant and incentive programs. Demonstrated knowledge of community energy planning, green building initiatives and renewable energy technologies (solar PV, district energy, microgrids, etc.) within a municipal context. Project management, research and analysis skills, including the ability to conduct rigorous research, summarize findings and present recommendations. Experience leading or participating in community engagement and developing educational tools. Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex concepts for non‑technical audiences. Resourcefulness, creativity and strategic thinking to develop sustainable solutions and build stakeholder buy‑in. Leadership skills to provide direction to staff and stakeholders and serve as lead on program and project initiatives. Understanding of action‑planning and program development processes, including planning, costing and implementation strategies. Excellent time management, prioritization and organizational skills. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; knowledge of GHG software (GHG inventory tools) is an asset. Valid Ontario “G” driver’s licence and reliable vehicle access for corporate use. Ability to work outside normal business hours as required. Designations Considered an Asset Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or Greenhouse Gas Inventory Quantifier, or pursuing these. Membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners and Ontario Professional Planners Institute and designation as a Registered Professional Planner (RPP). Accreditation through Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (e.g., LEED Green Associate, LEED AP).
