Sessional Lecturer - PHLD09H3: Advanced Seminar in Bioethics (Emergency Posting) This advanced seminar will delve deeply into an important topic in bioethics. The topics will vary from year to year. Possible topics include: A detailed study of sperm and ovum donation Human medical research in developing nations Informed consent Classification of mental illness Job Details The following position for a Sessional Lecturer is available in the Department of Philosophy for the Winter 2026 academic session. This is an emergency posting in accordance with the Collective Agreement between The Governing Council of the University of Toronto and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3902 Unit 3. Please note that the position below is tentative, pending final course determinations and enrollments. This posting is sent as an email notification to all applicants in the Department’s Applicant Pool: all Sessional Lecturers who are teaching for the Department during the current academic year or who have taught for the Department within the past twenty-four months and all persons who have submitted an application within the past twenty-four months. Application Process All pool members who wish to be considered must submit an application and updated CV to Professor Julia Nefsky, Chair of the Department of Philosophy, University of Toronto Scarborough using the online application system found at https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/webapps/cupehiring/. Preference will be given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12. Remuneration and Dates Salary: $9,820.70 for a half course inclusive of 4% vacation pay (based on current CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement). If rates differ, the Collective Agreement rates prevail. Appointment Dates: 1 January 2026 – 30 April 2026 Sessional Dates (including exam periods): 5 January 2026 – 24 April 2026 Note: All positions involve completion of any course grading not already finished by 30 April 2026. Minimum Qualifications PhD in philosophy with expertise in the field of bioethics and consciousness studies; strong academic record and professional promise; ongoing research and scholarly publications in the field; three years of prior experience as a course instructor in philosophy at UofT; relevant and recent teaching experience. Preference will be given to applicants whose proposals address the intersection of consciousness studies and bioethics.
