About the Role: Responsible for providing guidance and assisting the legal team of the Legal and Clerks Services Departments (“LCS”) on claims administration for the Corporation and will work closely with the team to meet the department’s goal to provide cost effective, high quality and efficient service. To be successful in this role, the incumbent will be a critical thinker, who is knowledgeable of current insurance legislation and legal processes and is adept at problem solving and will use their exceptional communication and organizational skills to execute the duties and responsibilities as outlined below (these set out the principal functions of the position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements). What You'll be Doing: Administers and investigates the day-to-day claims for the Corporation, including third party and first party claims, and incident monitoring/reporting. Investigates, negotiates, resolves, or denies claims made against the Corporation for general liability losses, including bodily injury and property, within authorized limits as delegated by the Insurance Supervisor and City Solicitor. Works closely and collaborates with internal and external partners including the Insurance Supervisor and City Solicitors, claimants, insurance adjusters, assigned legal counsel, insurers, and insurance providers, to investigate claims, assess exposure, and resolve matters, including negotiating a reasonable settlement as authorized. Identifies and pursues recovery/subrogation opportunities. Prepares correspondence such as letters of demand, acknowledgements, inquiries, denials, and as required. Reviews and analyzes relevant productions, including expert reports (such as appraisals, engineering reports, etc.), legal reports, medical records, repair estimates, and other relevant supporting documentation, as required. Retains the services of outside experts such as appraisers, engineers, as required. Obtains and secures statements/interviews from claimants and witnesses, as required. Performs site visits/scene investigations to document loss scenes, as required. Reviews and analyzes insurance coverages as appropriate. Documents and maintains claims files to ensure complete and accurate records are available. Attends claims litigation, mediation and arbitration proceedings as client representative for the Corporation, as required. May be accompanied by Supervisor for approval/direction, as required. Reviews findings and analysis, and departmental statistics with Supervisor. Assists with internal insurance related duties including the corporate insurance renewal, assists with insurance certificates, and other insurance related duties as assigned. Other related duties as assigned. What's Required: Completion of post-secondary education and a minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in claims, preferably in a municipal or other government environment. Demonstrated experience in the insurance industry involving the adjusting and processing of property and casualty claims, including both commercial and personal lines of insurance; significant exposure related to general liability claims including bodily injury and third-party property losses. Understanding and interpreting relevant medical terminology and records, exposure to setting loss reserves and loss analysis. Understanding and interpreting relevant insurance terminology, coverages and settlements relating to property losses. Chartered Insurance Professional designation from The Insurance Institute of Canada completed or near completion. Sound knowledge of principles, practices, and theories of the claims process, insurance legislation, and applicable law. Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant standards, legislation, regulations such as the Municipal Act; the Negligence Act, the Occupiers’ Liability Act; the Insurance Act, Minimum Maintenance Standards; property and auto insurance standards). Exceptional planning and time management skills with the ability to multi-task within a dynamic environment. Superior communication skills (written and verbal) with excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills to build effective relationships in a team environment. Detail oriented with exceptional research, analytical and critical thinking skills to solve problems and recommend solutions. High degree of integrity with the ability to maintain strict confidentiality and discretion. Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft 365 Suite software programs, and the ability to adapt quickly to applicable software. Valid Ontario Driver’s license, Class “G”, with a clean driving record. A demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture. Participates in professional associations, meetings, seminars and workshops to obtain and exchange beneficial information regarding claims, risk management and insurance. #J-18808-Ljbffr
