The Forestry department offers a 2-year Forest Resources Technology diploma which provides the technical and academic training required for starting a career in natural resource management. The program emphasizes the recognition and appreciation of all the major values of the forest including timber, recreation, wildlife, range, fish, water, and visual landscapes. The program is accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada. Graduates of this program meet the required standard for membership with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC) as Registered Forest Technologists (RFT). Graduates are also eligible for membership with the College of Applied Biology as Registered Biology Technologists (RBTechs). The Forestry department oversees the VIU Woodlot, or Woodlot 0020, which is a sustainably managed 694-hectare forest tenure and a living classroom for students. Duties: The position includes a mix of teaching and woodlot management work that is equivalent to full-time hours. General responsibilities for all instructional faculty are to prepare and teach courses and programs; to tutor, advise, and evaluate students; and to engage in institutional service and scholarly activity. This position is to instruct first and second-year students in the Forest Resources Technology Program and manage VIU Woodlot 0020. For next academic year, the courses for instruction include FRST 143 Forest Hydrology and Riparian Management, FRST 261 Forest Harvesting Systems, FRST 262 Forest Harvest Planning, FRST 271 Forest Road Design, FRST 272 Forest Road Planning and Design and FRST 282 Information Technology. Specific tasks include preparing and delivering classes (indoors and outdoors) as well as designing and grading student assignments and tests. Individual course information can be found on the Forest Resources Technology program page. Required Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree or diploma in Forestry or Natural Resource Management plus at least five years of recent relevant experience in BC. Physically fit and capable of leading students in field activities. A commitment to, and understanding of, current teaching and learning practices in Forestry. A commitment to, and understanding of, the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the classroom. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in Forestry, Education or equivalent. In lieu of a Master's degree a second professional designation in a relevant field, alongside work experience, may be considered. A membership in, or eligible for membership with Forest Professional BC; Have, or be willing to obtain, a class 4 drivers license and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record. Demonstrated currency in the field through relevant work experience in an academic, industry, or research area.
