What To Expect Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Electrical Automation Engineer to contribute to the design and development of robust and stable automation equipment and assembly lines. You will join a world‑class team of engineers responsible for designing, building, and deploying Tesla in‑house discrete and process automation equipment solutions for Optimus, cell manufacturing, Energy, and vehicle general assembly. The Electrical Engineer will work closely with cross‑functional teams such as Mechanical Design Engineering, Project Management, and other Controls Engineers throughout the entire life cycle of the equipment from initial design, through development and into full production. What You'll Do Take part in equipment concept development and balance product specifications, electrical requirements, part selection, controls architecture, and costs. Define system interconnect, electrical schematic, and key electrical automation components with other engineering groups to ensure the design criteria are synchronized within all disciplines such as Manufacturing, Mechanical, Software, Process to meet requirements. Work closely with project managers and other discipline team members to ensure all expectations and specifications are translated into the final design. Provide oversight to vendors on electrical and control related deliverables to ensure adherence to regulatory standards, Tesla standards, equipment specification, and pass field labeling. Design power distribution, control panels, and systems interconnect to meet NFPA79, IEC 60204‑1, UL 508A standards, and design functional safety circuitry as per ISO 13849‑1. Troubleshoot, identify root causes in electrical system, control panel, field electrical devices, instrumentation, and safety interlock circuits, providing mitigation techniques to address issues as they arise. Design, develop and commission machine control systems from concept through implementation. Design industrial control panels, high voltage AC and low voltage control (24 VDC) power distribution and control systems using Beckhoff, Siemens and Allen‑Bradley platforms. Provide training when transitioning solutions to the sustaining and production teams and contribute to Tesla electrical standards and best‑practice documents. Must be able to travel both domestically and internationally, maintain a valid passport, travel can be 25% of time, with additional travel needed during busy commissioning season. What You'll Bring Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience. Proficient in electrical CAD systems, preferably Eplan Electrical P8 Version 2023. Professional experience selecting proper circuit protectors, disconnects, wires, cables, sensors, safety hardware, PLC hardware systems, modules, contactors, relays, variable frequency drives, servo systems, safety components, and other key electrical control components. Knowledge of electrical standards such as NFPA 79, NEC, IEC 60204‑1, UL 508, ISO 13849‑1 and ISO 12100. Familiarity with Siemens, Beckhoff, Allen‑Bradley control systems and components. Familiarity with EtherCAT, FSoE, ProfiNet, ProfiSafe field buses. Firsthand experience with equipment troubleshooting for high voltage, industrial control circuits, instrumentation, and safety interlock systems. Ability to read process and instrumentation diagrams to create electrical design and schematic. Ability to work within a team environment, leading and providing guidance to other team members.
