Application Closing Date January 11, 2026, at midnight Overview The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Specialist, Environmental Risk Assessor for the Regulatory Compliance branch. The role interprets environmental chemical data and receptor characteristics to evaluate risks associated with contamination. It provides risk analysis, guidance, and advice to hydrogeologists, soil specialists, compliance staff, and managers. This position includes a significant freshwater contaminant risk and spill support component, including after‑hours emergency support, reviews and provides specialized technical support for major applications, approvals, contaminated site remediation and management plans, spill containment and monitoring, and emergency releases involving chemical discharges that pose safety or ecological risk. What Your Day-to-Day Looks Like Evaluate surface water, soil and groundwater contamination incidents and provide scientific support to protect the environment and public. Engage with limnologists, waste management specialists, soil, and groundwater specialists to ensure appropriate expertise is included in incident response. Provide technical advice on contaminated site characterization, mitigation, monitoring design, spill recovery, decommissioning, remediation, and environmental risk assessment for specified energy activities. Conduct site visits and engage with approval holders and stakeholders as needed. Review tier 2 / site‑specific risk assessment aspects of activities regulated under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) for energy‑related industrial facilities. Provide receptor, chemical, toxicological expert evaluation of applications, renewals, amendments and proposed technologies; review risk management and monitoring proposals for approved facilities and provide input into authorizations. Provide leadership with environmental risk information for site decisions and participate in regulatory hearings as a scientific subject‑matter expert. Promote and support a team‑based approach to contaminant release management; engage with approval holders to promote low‑impact remediation and adaptive monitoring. Maintain relationships with government, industry, and the public; collaborate with Government of Alberta scientific staff to ensure consistent application of policies, guidelines and directives across the oil, gas, oilsands and coal energy sectors. What We’re Looking For Master’s degree in environmental science. Accredited Professional Biologist (P. Biol) and membership in good standing with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists is an asset. Credentials for the Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta (P.Chem), Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (P.Eng, P.Geo), or Alberta Institute of Agrologists (PAg), and Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (DIABT) are considered assets. 3‑5 years of experience in chemical contamination, receptor characterization, environmental hazards, and risk assessment. Understanding of EPEA and related Acts, and ability to balance environmental harm versus remediation damage is preferred. Strong attention to detail and the ability to meet tight deadlines. Collaboration skills to work effectively with others on shared tasks and goals. Additional Information All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada. Pre‑placement medical exam and a fully valid Class 5 driver’s license with a positive driving record are required. Ability to walk on varied terrain, work near heavy equipment, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Travel 1‑2 nights per month is required. Position blends 10% field work and 90% office work. Required training will be provided, e.g., First Aid, H2S Alive, Driver Training.
