Working for the Department

The Elko Engineering Garage, operated through the Faculty of Engineering, is an open-access machine shop-style makerspace catering to the hands-on machining, fabrication, and building needs of Universityof Alberta students and community members. Under the direction of the Garage Director, reporting to the Garage Application Supervisor, the Application Specialist works within a team to meet the training, service, and technical needs of Garage community members while supporting the day-to-day operations of the Garage.

Position

The Garage Application Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day on-site training, service, operations, and maintenance of the Elko Engineering Garage makerspace and its associated equipment, systems, and infrastructure. Duties include operation, development, optimization, calibration, documentation, initial troubleshooting, and basic maintenance of Garage equipment, systems, and associated infrastructure.

The Application Specialist will also lead all training, system expertise, and support for users accessing the Garage. The Application Specialist will lead users on feedback for improvement or suggestions for projectsand provide advice and guidance on special techniques.

The position will also provide educational support services for technical courses offered through the Garage, fee-for-service work as assigned, and recommend, plan, and implement operational and space improvements, increasing the efficiency of training, service, equipment, and safety. This position will be the primary contact for technical and operational support on a day-to-day basis for over 50 individual tools and processes totaling $5M in equipment and infrastructure within a 10,000-square-foot laboratory environment. This position will also have a secondary focus on supporting the administrative oversight and management of the Garage through the direction of the Application Supervisor concerning safety issues, policies, and procedures for anticipating, correcting, and improving Garage operations and administration.

Duties

Working within the Elko Engineering Garage, the Application Specialist will be assigned responsibilities and report to the Application Supervisor for all aspects of the position as outlined below. The Garage Director provides final oversight.
  • Independently coordinates, schedules, communicates, and provides operational, technical, and maintenance support of Garage equipment and processes to facility users through training, fee for service, and development of new procedures, operations, and processes.
  • Assist the user community in reviewing and accessing equipment capabilities for intended utilization, preparing process flows for builds, and determining the best Garage equipment set for achieving users' needs.
  • Independently performs, suggests, and implements new designs, hardware, protocols, and procedures to expand Garage capabilities.
  • Independently recommends, develops, performs, and documents optimization, calibration, and other preventative/process maintenance protocols to maintain the operational readiness of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Independently recommends, reviews, develops, and modifies as required any and all documentation, including but not limited to training checklists, hazard assessments, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all tools and processes to ensure optimal and repeatable utilization, outcomes, and processes.
  • Independently documents and maintains accurate and timely records of maintenance and operational use of equipment, systems, infrastructure, and processes through group digital management systems.
  • Responsible for monitoring, identifying, reviewing, and recommending safety protocols and setting up administrative and engineering controls to maximize safety and safe operations in the Garage.
  • Independently responsible for performing or scheduling all aspects of routine and as-needed maintenance and repairs of Garage equipment and infrastructure.
  • Provides insight, support, and execution in developing all facility policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as required and assigned by Garage management.
Minimum Qualifications
  • BSc. or MSc. in an Engineering discipline with PEng or EIT designation.
  • 2 years of CAD experience (Fusion 360, Inventor, Solidworks).
  • Hands-on experience with one or more of the following fabrication groups: CAM, Metalworking, woodworking, rapid prototyping, electronics prototyping, textiles, plastics, and CNC machinery.CAM, EagleCAD, LTSpice, programming (Python, C, Arduino IDE), Adobe Suite experience. Relevant experience in a manufacturing environment is an asset.
  • 1 year teaching/mentoring and instructional experience to individuals or small groups.
