Mainframe Storage Administrator

Our client, a large professional services partner located in Ottawa, ON, is looking to hire a Mainframe Storage Administrator for a 6–12‑month remote contract. The Mainframe Storage Administrator is responsible for the configuration, maintenance, and optimization of enterprise mainframe storage systems. This role ensures high availability, performance, and data integrity across all storage platforms, supporting mission‑critical business operations. The administrator collaborates with cross‑functional teams to implement scalable storage solutions and troubleshoot complex issues. The consultant will manage storage infrastructure, administering DASD, tape libraries, and virtual tape systems in a z/OS environment. Responsibilities include monitoring and managing storage capacity, performance, and utilization, implementing and maintaining backup and recovery procedures, analyzing performance metrics, resolving bottlenecks, tuning configurations for optimal throughput, planning and executing storage upgrades and migrations, performing firmware updates, patching, and hardware lifecycle management. The role also requires ensuring compliance with internal policies and external regulations (e.g., data retention, privacy). Required Skills Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience. 5+ years of experience in mainframe storage administration. Proficiency in z/OS, DFSMS, and related IBM storage technologies. Experience administering DASD, tape libraries, and virtual tape systems in a z/OS environment. Familiarity with SAN/NAS environments and enterprise backup tools (e.g., IBM Spectrum Protect). Experience planning and performing upgrades, migrations, etc. Experience with performance tuning and capacity planning.
