The ideal candidate will be able to bring industry experience into the classroom, develop course and program curriculum, deal with relevant operational and educational issues, and cultivate positive relationships with students. The Marine Campus is located in North Vancouver and is a premier provider of marine training in Canada. The campus has a strong history of marine engineering instruction and industry connections.Duties & ResponsibilitiesClassroom instruction to cadets, entry-level, upgrader, PTS or Industry Services studentsWorkshop and laboratory instruction and supervisionInstructional counseling, evaluation and preparationAdministrative responsibilities, including assignments, examination marking, and student evaluationCurriculum development, maintenance and program enhancementAdministrative processes required to ensure appropriate resources are in place to deliver trainingOther duties directly related to instruct/facilitate of trades and vocational programsInput into development of modifications to workshop and instructional areasPreparing and presenting online teaching, classroom lectures, classroom management, practical demonstrations, and collaborating with the Marine Engineering Department Head and facultyMaintaining a commitment to the campus quality management system per ISO 9001:2015Student supervision on industry field tripsIn addition, the successful candidate should:Motivate students to learnProvide an inclusive, diverse and safe learning environment in the classroom, laboratory and workshopTeach employability skills and assist with time managementProvide mentorship and support for students who are struggling and challenge those who are excellingCommit to teaching excellence and preparation of outstanding graduatesQualificationsValid First or Second-Class STCW Motor or Steam Combined Certificate of Competency or valid qualifications for Electrical engineering/automation & controlsMinimum five years seagoing engineer experience or equivalent shore-based position while in possession of a valid STCW certificateFirst or Second-Class Motor or Steam Combined or Degree or Diploma in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Control & Automation Engineering with relevant experienceFirst-class Canadian Certificate of CompetencySolid communication skills (excellent command of the English language, both written and oral)Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skillsDemonstrated computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation softwarePrior teaching experience and mentoring trainees is an assetAdditional InformationBenefits – Competitive payMinimum of forty-six days of annual leave prorated per yearCompetitive employer-paid extended health and dental plan, including access to a Health Care Spending Account up to $500 if eligibleDefined benefit pension plan with employer contributionsAccess to most BCIT Flexible Learning courses free of chargeWellness and Employee Assistance programsComplimentary membership with free access to the Fitness Centre, Gymnasium, and moreEligibility requirements apply; benefits may vary depending on employee group and whether the position is temporary or part-timeFor more information on benefits, click hereBCIT is committed to equity, diversity & inclusion and to promoting opportunities in hiring for systemically oppressed groups.
