Manager, Environment and Regulatory Strategy Location: Kimberley, BC, CanadaEmployment Type: Regular Full TimeWorkplace Type: Hybrid Role Overview Reporting to the Director, Legacy Properties, the Manager, Environment and Regulatory Strategy is responsible for development, implementation and continuous improvement of environmental and regulatory strategies and activities to lead risks and ensure compliance of Teck’s Legacy Properties with applicable federal, provincial and Teck internal requirements and commitments to Indigenous Government Organizations. The Manager, Environment and Regulatory Strategy leads a small team of environment, water and permitting professionals and influences a multidisciplinary team within Teck Legacy Properties to plan and complete safe and cost-effective stewardship and risk reduction activities in compliance with permits and Teck standards, including water monitoring, management and treatment; tailings facility management; geotechnical monitoring and mitigation of underground features; and vegetation management. This role provides the opportunity to develop and implement long term strategic plans that improve environmental, social and commercial outcomes for the sites and the local communities. Based in Kimberley, Vancouver or an agreed-upon location, this stellar individual will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams in Legacy Properties and across the organization. The successful candidate will provide outstanding leadership on regulatory compliance, environmental risk identification and management, and strategic oversight on regulatory and permitting opportunities and challenges. This role is crucial for improving environmental, legal, regulatory, and social outcomes of our legacy sites. Key Responsibilities Be a courageous safety leader to ensure that all workers, including contractors, go home safe and healthy every day. Adhere to and sponsor safety and sustainability policies and procedures. Nurture and lead a high-performing team comprised of environmental, water, biodiversity and permitting experts, including staff, contractors and consultants, by providing clear direction, performance feedback and recognition. Analyze resourcing needs and provide recommendations on the team organization and composition. Provide technical leadership and oversight of environmental and water management programs, including but not limited to water quality, toxicity, air and soil quality, spill and waste management, aquatic and terrestrial wildlife, erosion and sediment control. Provide direction on contractor scopes and critically review reporting requirements. Lead and continuously improve the Legacy Properties Environmental Management Program. Provide timely and informative support and subject matter expertise to Legacy Properties site teams to ensure that environmental and water best practices and regulatory requirements are considered and fulfilled. Lead regulatory engagement, including: Develop and implement regulatory strategies to navigate complex regulatory landscapes, with thoughtful evaluation of options, risks, benefits and likelihoods; Identify key risks, issues and opportunities associated with regulatory strategies and options; Prepare and/or coordinate the preparation of comprehensive and clear regulatory submissions; Ensure compliance with existing permits and regulations; Advise on, prepare and ensure management of permitting requirements; and Negotiate, develop and implement agreements with regulators. Collaborate with site teams to: Identify environmental, water, and regulatory risks for legacy sites, ensuring that risks are clearly described in site risk registers, with identification and implementation of appropriate and effective controls. Develop risk treatment plans as the need arises, including identifying, selecting, dimensioning, and performing environmental and regulatory mitigation strategies and options. Drive prioritization and decision making to mitigate environmental, water and regulatory risks, with proactive communication to senior leaders and internal and external stakeholders and rightsholders to Teck. Remain current on environmental and water issues and regulatory changes with the potential to impact Teck’s legacy sites. Communicate changes and impacts across the Legacy Properties team as appropriate. Ensure that Teck’s legacy sites conform with Teck standards. Support governance reviews and audits and regulatory inspections for Legacy sites. Develop and implement gap closure plans and corrective actions as the need arises. Participate in engagement events with the public and First Nations to build positive relationships by providing expertise. Qualifications 15+ years of experience providing leadership in environmental compliance and risk management in mining or natural resource industry. Post‑secondary degree in environmental‑related field. Professional designation (e.g. PEng, RPF, PBio, Pag) preferred. Deep understanding and demonstrated experience in the application of mining and environmental legislation and permitting processes for relevant jurisdictions in North America. Ability to interpret and navigate complex regulations, build and drive regulatory strategy. Technical understanding of environmental subject areas, compliance practices, risk evaluation and mitigation. Strong team leader with experience forming, inspiring, and leading a team of employees, contractors, and consultants from diverse fields and backgrounds. Highly organized, with the ability to thrive in a complex and dynamic setting and prioritize competing demands and deadlines. Outstanding interpersonal, influencing, and communications (written and verbal) skills. Pay Range: CAD $147,000 - $182,000 per year The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
