ABOUT THE ROLE

The Energy Optimization Engineer oversees and delivers optimization solutions for various energy studies and proposals, including investment-grade studies. This role requires flexibility in responding to customer and corporate needs, providing expertise in optimizing HVAC systems and their integration with other building energy systems. The Energy Optimization Engineer leads system analyses and provides optimization designs and requirements for energy studies, Enervolve reports, energy performance contracting projects, multidisciplinary engineering efforts, and technical sales support.

WHAT YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

• Conducting preliminary, detailed, and investment-grade (+/-5% accuracy) analyses and simulations of existing HVAC systems and their associated controls to identify potential operational and efficiency improvements.
• Proposing building automation system control sequences and upgrades based on ASHRAE Guideline 36, AI Optimization strategies, and industry best practices for economically viable optimization as part of broader energy and carbon reduction measures.
• Developing and utilizing tools for replicable and demonstrable analysis and reporting of findings and benefits. Communicating these findings to internal and external stakeholders in both digital and written formats for inclusion in study write-ups and technical project development documentation.
• Undertaking technical investigations and collection of pertinent information from customer sites and technical documentation to ensure the most accurate body of knowledge is created to enable investment-grade optimization energy engineering is undertaken and delivered for each project.
• Executing and managing optimization strategies and scope development for all ASHRAE Level I, II, and III energy audits/studies, utilizing Blackstone’s ratified energy engineering modeling tools and feasibility study document formats.
• Writing, developing, and preparing optimization requirements, strategies, and designs for detailed and investment-grade energy audits/studies, including solicitation and summary of subcontractor pricing, detailed energy, optimization, and operational savings calculations, financial and energy modeling, economic analysis, energy systems specification, and conceptualization.
• Providing technical and writing support for RFIs, RFPs, and tenders as required.
• Evaluating, documenting, reporting, and presenting proposed project scopes, risks, and benefits to internal executive staff.
• Planning, scheduling, organizing, directing, and controlling all costs associated with engineering, consulting, and subcontracting for optimization energy engineering for assigned projects.
• Managing and documenting and systematically organizing project management files, including correspondence, RFIs, and timelines. Producing high-quality communications adhering to company standards.
• Contributing to the development of project schedules and providing progress updates on a weekly basis or as specified by your direct supervisor.
• Developing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with customers, consultants, prime contractors, subcontractors, and trade personnel. Attending job progress meetings and providing detailed instructions to consultants and subcontractors, ensuring clear understanding of project expectations.
• Facilitating communication with team members, subcontractors, and other employees.
• Adhering to safety standards, with a high regard for employee and subcontractor safety.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

• Engineering diploma or bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, or an Associate’s degree with equivalent related work experience in HVAC systems optimization, energy services, data science, and energy engineering.
• A minimum of 10 years of work experience.
• P.Eng. designation in the Province of Ontario is required.
• Experience in software-based energy modeling.
• CEM and CMVP designations are assets.

Knowledge:

• Engineering design and construction, building energy systems (especially hydronic and air-side HVAC systems), building operation and maintenance requirements, renewable systems, energy modeling, report writing, and energy efficiency/GHG reduction solutions development.
• Understanding of building automation system (BAS) sequences of operation, architecture, including hardware components (controllers, sensors, actuators), network protocols (e.g., BACnet), system integration points, supervisory control layers, and data management infrastructure.
• Proficient knowledge of data management principles including data cleaning, normalization, and quality assurance procedures specific to building energy datasets.
• Understanding of measurement and verification (M&V) methodologies (IPMVP) and statistical approaches to quantify energy conservation measure impacts. Knowledge of ongoing commissioning and Advanced M&V methods (M&V 2.0) is considered an asset.
• Familiarity with building data semantic modeling frameworks (e.g., Project Haystack, Brick Schema) for building data modeling and interoperability.
• Experience in investment-grade energy engineering is essential.
• Knowledge of HVAC system fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) is considered an asset.
