The First Nations Health Managers Association (FNHMA) is expanding its program team and is looking for a full-time Capacity Development Officer. This is an opportunity for you if you are passionate about supporting First Nations health leaders and are seeking to develop your skills in supporting a range of capacity development programs.

FNHMA is a not-for-profit national professional association involved in expanding health management capacity for First Nations. FNHMA provides leadership in First Nation health management activities by developing and promoting quality standards, practices, research, certification, networking, and professional development to expand capacity for our members and First Nations.

Scope of Position

Reporting to the Director of Programs and working closely with the Programs Team, the Capacity Development Officer is responsible for supporting FNHMA Workshops (i.e. Health and Wellness Planning) and the Certified First Nations Health Manager Program (CFNHMP). They will work together with instructors and facilitators to support workshop and course delivery, including providing support to individual learners as necessary.

Working closely with the DoP, the Capacity Development Officer will support the development of funding proposals and provide support to project work, including, but not limited to communicating with contractors and supporting with background research.

FNHMA has a strong team approach to the delivery of all its programs and services. The Capacity Development Officer will work within a team environment to carry out the following activities and responsibilities:

Certified First Nations Health Manager Program Responsibilities
  1. Preparing learners for course requirements, including answering questions from current and prospective learners and supporting their navigation of the CFNHM online learning platform.
  2. Support learners with assignments, including providing assignment support sessions, answering questions on assignment requirements, grading assignments, and providing constructive feedback to learners in a timely manner.
  3. Recognizing learners’ efforts and empowering learners in their CFNHM program journey.
  4. Analyzing learner trends and input from class evaluations and classroom interactions and utilizing feedback to inform program improvements.
  5. Contributing to the ongoing quality improvement of the CFNHM program through researching wise practices and integrating feedback from our learners into our tools and resources.
Workshop and Project Responsibilities
  1. Seeking opportunities for FNHMA to provide workshops and courses to health leaders through direct outreach to First Nations organizations and by leveraging existing FNHMA partnerships.
  2. Preparing and coordinating workshop events and materials. This includes any post-workshop follow-up communications and tasks.
  3. Developing and writing funding proposals.
  4. Occasional travel to a range of urban, rural, and remote locations to support the delivery of the CFNHMP courses and FNHMA workshops will be required.
  5. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Programs.
Qualifications and Skills
  1. A post-secondary degree and 3 years of related experience, preferably with an Indigenous organization and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Knowledge of First Nations health services management issues, services, and delivery.
  3. Experience working with the health sector within First Nations organizations.
  4. Knowledge of current and historical issues facing First Nations peoples.
  5. Experience working with a variety of web-based platforms and confidence in ability to learn new platforms as needed.
  6. Skilled at writing funding proposals.
  7. Strong organizational and planning skills, attention to detail, and commitment to producing high-quality deliverables in a timely manner.
  8. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  9. Ability to demonstrate judgement, tact, innovation, and initiative.
  10. Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  11. Currently possessing, or interest in earning, the Certified First Nations Health Manager (CFNHM) designation.
  12. Bilingual (English/French) as well as fluency/familiarity with Indigenous languages is considered a strong asset.
