Ottawa Riverkeeper invites applications for new Board Members

Ottawa Riverkeeper is open to receiving applications for new volunteer members to the Board of Directors, the highest leadership level within the organization. The timing of recruitment for new Board members is dependent upon whether or not there are vacant positions to fill. If there are no current vacancies, applications will be kept on file for future consideration.

Position: Director, Ottawa Riverkeeper

Type: Volunteer

Term: 3 years

Commitment: 5-10 hours per month

In-person or Virtual Participation

Compensation: An honorarium may be available for members of Equity-Deserving Groups

Recruitment

Ottawa Riverkeeper’s Board aims to be composed of people with diverse perspectives, skills, experiences, and backgrounds, and we believe this makes us stronger. We believe our work is improved when it is informed by the experience, knowledge, and wisdom of people who have faced systemic barriers. We encourage applications from women and/or non-binary people, racialized, Black, and/or People of Colour, people with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, and Indigenous Peoples. We also encourage applications from youth and those who have been or currently are active volunteers with Ottawa Riverkeeper.

The Board’s nominating and governance committee has identified the following skills and interest areas for this year’s recruitment:

  • Finance experience: reviewing quarterly financial reports and supporting long-term financial planning
  • Legal expertise: with specific experience in human resources and/or nonprofit law
  • Human Resources: providing oversight on organizational human resources management policies, practices, and governance matters
  • Advocacy & Government Relations: Strengthening our connections with various levels of government including federal, provincial, municipal, and Anishinābeg Algonquin Nations
  • Fundraising expertise: supporting our team on strategy, reviewing plans and results, and if possible, helping to expand our network of donors and supporters

When considering the diversity of the watershed and the current composition of the Board of Directors, applications are specifically encouraged from persons who are Anishinābeg Algonquin and/or who are francophone.

Note: We do not expect any candidate to fulfill all of these areas, nor to represent or speak on behalf of any particular demographic or community.

In addition, we are seeking candidates who understand the role of a non-profit, charitable Board of Directors and who are committed to promoting justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion in our work.

If you would like to begin a conversation about accommodations or accessibility requirements throughout the recruitment process, please contact our operations team (nominations@ottawariverkeeper.ca).

To apply, please submit your resume and provide a concise description (250 words or fewer) as to why you’re interested in joining the volunteer Board of Directors.

About Ottawa Riverkeeper

Ottawa Riverkeeper, a charitable organization, is a champion and collective voice for the Ottawa River watershed, providing leadership and inspiration to protect, promote, and improve its ecological health and future.

Ottawa Riverkeeper’s vision is based on the belief that people protect what they love, to ensure the Ottawa River watershed is swimmable, drinkable, and fishable.

We are a citizen-based action group that brings diverse people together to better understand and advocate for the ecological health of the Ottawa River and its tributaries. This includes the acknowledgement of the rights of the Anishinābeg Algonquin Nations within the watershed and a commitment to working together to build good relationships and shared understandings on water protection.

Expert and independent, Ottawa Riverkeeper advocates for responsible and participatory decision-making, public education, access to information, and compliance with protective regulations. Guided by a science-based approach, we provide clear information to engage the public and empower citizens and decision-makers to ensure clean, healthy, and accessible water for all people and species.

Ottawa Riverkeeper is a licensed member of Waterkeeper Alliance, an international grassroots advocacy organization.

About the Board

The Board of Directors is legally responsible for the governance of Ottawa Riverkeeper. The Board sets policies, budgets and plans to ensure that Ottawa Riverkeeper achieves its goals and mission. They support the management team to set the mission and Strategic Plan of the organization, evaluate the performance of the Riverkeeper and CEO, and ensure fiscal accountability and the long-term resiliency of the organization.

Once the Board has approved the goals, strategies, and plans, it delegates their management to the Riverkeeper and CEO, and it acts in a unified and cohesive manner in supporting and guiding them. The Riverkeeper and CEO keeps the Board fully informed of the progress toward the achievement of the goals, strategies, and plans, in a timely manner.

Functions of the Board

  • To oversee the management of the affairs of Ottawa Riverkeeper.
  • To determine Ottawa Riverkeeper’s vision, mission, and core values.
  • To develop a long-range strategic plan.
  • To approve the annual operating and capital budgets that support the long-range strategic plan.
  • To set written policies on how Ottawa Riverkeeper is to be managed.
  • To ensure the integrity of internal controls and management information systems.
  • To identify and mitigate risks whether financial, operational or reputational.
  • To conduct an annual board evaluation.
  • To appoint, support and evaluate the Riverkeeper and CEO.
  • To have input into fundraising planning and assist with donor identification, cultivation and stewardship.

Responsibilities of the members of the Board of Directors

  • Stand for a 3-year mandate. Ottawa Riverkeeper by-laws allow for mandates to be renewed once, for a maximum of six years;
  • Plan to attend, preferably in person, and if not possible through virtual/online means, every board meeting (typically 5-6 annually, two-hour evening meetings). Directors are required to attend no fewer than 80% of all scheduled meetings.
  • Plan to sit on at least one committee of the Board.
  • Attend Ottawa Riverkeeper-sponsored functions whenever possible, including receptions and fundraising events such as the Riverkeeper Gala;
  • Always be an advocate for the organization;
  • Make Ottawa Riverkeeper one of their top volunteer priorities;
  • Make a contribution annually at a level that is personally significant, which may vary widely between Directors;
  • Support staff in networking and fundraising when possible, such as making introductions for staff to follow-up, helping with expressions of thanks when appropriate, and accompanying staff to key visits;
  • Keep well-informed of developments relevant to issues that may come from the Board and staff;
  • Recognize that their job is to ensure that the organization is well-managed, not to manage the organization;
  • Consider themselves a “trustee” of the organization and do their best to ensure it is well-maintained, financially secure, and always operating in accordance with our stated objectives; and
  • Adhere to the Code of Ethics and Business Conduct

  • Élaborer un plan stratégique à long terme
