Job Summary:

The Director, Insurance & Loss Prevention is an integral and key member of the Safety & Risk Services senior management team. This is a strategic role, responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing the Insurance and Loss Prevention program University-wide. It is responsible for a $10 million budget that includes managing and legal administration of the comprehensive insurance portfolio (approximately 33 core and wrap around insurance contracts plus all blanket and stand-alone construction policies for owner controlled programs) for the University, including insurance policies, contracts and agreements, as well as managing approvals and negotiations with institutionally approved self-insurance pools as well as with insurers and/or their authorized representatives. This position will act as the leader and key expert for the University with respect to both short- and long-term risk management and procurement strategies for a large corporate insurance program including all domestic and international property and casualty insurance placements. In addition, this position will set the direction and lead the strategic development, implementation and oversight of the University’s loss prevention program to address high priority risks based on data analysis and stakeholder input.

Organizational Status:

Reports to the Executive Director, Safety & Risk Services. Liaises with all levels of the University community, as well as related or affiliated entities, and external parties on a regular basis.

Work Performed:

  • Provides university-wide support for risk-based decision making on the procurement and financial management of insurance placements, claims management as well as other related systematic functions.
  • Actively participates as a risk and insurance resource for institutional committees to support the embedment and integration of risk management as part of informed decision making.
  • Leads and facilitates the assessment and evaluation of insurable risks and hazards for the institution and provides recommendations and mitigation strategies to prevent and/or reduce the risk profile to within the appetite and acceptable operational thresholds including transfer of risk as applicable to policies of insurance.
  • Extensive experience in the financial management, oversight and advisory services for the university’s claims management program including developing strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, developing and maintaining an effective claims management framework including records management system, resolution of complex claims, oversight/budgeting for reserves, claim tracking as well as formal reporting for governance and trend analysis.
  • In-depth experience and seasoned proficiency in developing, leading, implementing and overseeing the university’s loss prevention program which includes strategies, practices and measures to mitigate and protect the university community and its valued assets. This is a proactive program intended to identify, assess and evaluate potential hazard risks, while recommending and supporting preventive measures to proactively mitigate losses before and at the time they do occur. li>
  • Oversees and evaluates the ongoing renewals of the University’s insurance policies and initiates new types of insurance, when required.
  • Considers and recommends, as appropriate, alternative risk financing and loss prevention options for institutional risks.
  • Analyzes risk and formulates risk management strategies and provides input and leadership with respect to the institutional appetite as well as alignment to the Safety & Risk Services Strategic Plan.
  • Develops and oversees the management of complex insurance claims, working with insurers, brokers, adjusters, and internal and external legal counsel as required.
  • Leads the preparation of the University’s Insurance Reserve Budget, and the management of related reporting and allocation of portions of premiums.
  • Represents University and liaises with peers at other post-secondary education institutions in British Columbia, Canada and the US to remain informed and share best practices in insurance and loss prevention.
  • Reviews workflows, administrative processes and emerging priorities to modernize and continually improve operations within the unit and the Safety & Risk Services portfolio.
  • In collaboration with senior leadership within Safety and Risk Services, recommend, design and implement proactive loss prevention and risk management strategies for key risks of the University.
  • Provide leadership, direction and mentorship to staff within the Insurance and Loss Prevention unit. This includes coaching, supervising and supporting team members to achieve personal and institutional goals by your inclusive nature, sharing vision and institutional objectives, setting clear expectations, ensuring opportunity for learning and development while managing and monitoring workloads.
  • Reviews and analyzes a wide variety of contracts and agreements, including leases and student placements, of varying complexities, to amend as required and approve insurance clauses and indemnifications, transferring risk from the University to the extent possible.
  • Acts as a resource and provides advice and assistance to the University community with respect to issues of liability, duty of care and negligence, with input from internal legal counsel as appropriate.
  • Develops and oversees the institutions framework and supporting processes for the Assumption of Risks, and Release of Liability (Waiver) templates.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in relevant discipline. Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in overseeing highly complex Insurance and Loss Prevention programs with institution with assets in excess of $1 billion dollars. Considerable experience analyzing contracts and other agreements and recommending liability and insurance clause language including working closely with other internal stakeholders including internal and external legal, procurement as well as research. Expert technical knowledge of common lines of commercial insurance. This includes demonstrated initiative, strong collaboration and team-building skills. Capability to successfully and independently manage multiple competing priorities with minimal supervision. Experience in post-secondary education institution and/or public sector is a strong asset.
