Our Liquid Waste Services Department is seeking a Senior Project Engineer or Project Engineer who will conduct technical work on a variety of environmental projects and issues. The successful candidate is a registered Professional Engineer in good standing, who will work on projects such as environmental monitoring and modeling; human health and ecological risk assessments; implementation of environmental due diligence; regulatory compliance and reporting; contaminated sites; strong>

You are: A critical thinker, a self-starter, a good communicator orally and in writing, a relationship builder, well organized and detail oriented, proficient in writing technical reports, and dedicated to regulatory compliance, continuous improvement, and environmental risk reduction.

This role:

  • Performs complex and varied environmental engineering and project management work that may involve project design and management for large projects. Applies principles and practices of environmental engineering to ensure results are achieved in a sound and practical manner.
  • Responsible for overall project budgets and monitors and controls costs ensuring the effective and efficient expenditure of allocated funds. Participates in short and long range planning.
  • Makes decisions and provides recommendations on a variety of issues with board policies and mandates as guidelines. li>
  • Prepares and reviews project designs, technical reports and contract specifications for consulting services, equipment and construction. Acts as Metro Vancouver’s appointed representative in assigned matters of project and contract obligations including project initiatives, site inspections, and determination of regulatory requirements. May be required to negotiate significant technical or financial interest on behalf of Metro Vancouver.
  • Sound technical knowledge and understanding of engineering, scientific, and quality management principles and their application in environmental management. Familiar with physical, chemical, and biological processes within the ecology of the natural environment, with demonstrated knowledge of environmental management, environmental monitoring and modeling, impact assessments, and ecological and human health risk assessments. A solid environmental engineering and sciences background, demonstrated skills in statistical analysis/interpretation, and knowledge of biological wastewater treatment processes and impacts of discharges on water and land ecosystems. Understanding of risks, regulations, and preventative controls for a broad range of environmental issues associated with operating liquid waste facilities and equipment (such as spills, stormwater, habitat protection, solid and hazardous wastes, greenhouse gases, invasive species, and resource use).
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal and provincial environmental legislation and regulations, environmental quality objectives and guidelines, engineering and technical guidelines and principles related to environmental management such as technical manuals, codes and regulations, contracting policies, safety regulations, and corporate and board policies. li>
  • Proven contract administration and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize a complex series of project components for large, complex projects to meet multiple time based deliverables requiring a high level of detail and accuracy. Ability to communicate effectively using letter, report writing, and presentation skills. Skill in dealing openly, tactfully and sensitively in a variety of situations including dealings with the public, member municipalities, government agencies, academia and contractors. Proven ability to take initiative, work with minimal supervision and effectively manage multiple projects and deadlines. Ability to mentor and foster the development of junior engineers, technical staff, and direct reports as required.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft office programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s license.

*Candidates with lesser experience may be considered at the Project Engineer level, along with the applicable rate of pay.
