We're driven to create value for people and places.VisionWe create value for people and placesOur Core ValuesTrustAmbitionCollaborationOwnership MindsetHaving FunAbout The PositionThe Partner, Tax is an integral member of the Finance & Operations Team (FinOps) and is the go‑to person for all tax matters for Hazelview. This position is responsible for the overall Canadian, US and foreign tax compliance process (direct/related filings) for 250+ legal entities by using Big 4 accounting firms for tax compliance work and tax project support. Accordingly, the position is responsible for reviewing select tax returns and project managing the end‑to‑end compliance process, including coordination with the FinOps team and accounting firms. The position is responsible for the oversight of the HST/GST compliance filings which includes development projects and Selected Listed Financial Institution (SLFI) projects. There is also some tax provision work for the non‑flow‑through vehicles or structures. The position will also correspond with tax authorities (including CRA, Revenu Quebec, and IRS) on tax related matters. Other areas of support include corporate tax payment and instalment management, and special projects and asset deals. To be successful, the incumbent must have a collaborative and practical approach with stakeholders and be able to communicate in a concise and clear fashion. We have a strong focus on using technology and process improvements to streamline and scale the tax function to meet business growth. We seek to continually improve the annual tax compliance process alongside our Big 4 partners. The incumbent must embrace the use of technology and have a process improvement mindset. This role is an excellent opportunity for someone who is looking to grow their skills in domestic and foreign corporate, trust, and partnership tax, with exposure to the real estate industry. They will build their tax knowledge through external learning and by working closely with external Tax Partners.Key ResponsibilitiesOverall management of the tax compliance process (Canadian, US, foreign) for corporations, trust, and partnerships, that are prepared by the Big 4 accounting firms, which are comprised of 250+ legal entities (approximately 25 funds and Hazelview management entities).Correspondence with CRA, Revenu Quebec, IRS, and other tax authorities asReview select HST/GST/QST compliance of corporate entities and developmentAnnual filings for Selected Listed Financial Institution HST/GST/QSTWork with internal FinOps accountants to analyze financial statements (primarily IFRS) for current and deferred tax amounts for funds and Hazelview corporate; coordinate with Big 4 accounting firms where necessary to discuss financial statement tax notes; select recurring tax provision work.Research and analyze tax matters and inquiries related to Hazelview funds and investors (e.g., tax slips from funds); build upon existing investor materials and guides.May participate in special projects with exposure to private equity/direct real estate investments for tax considerations, including exposure to Canadian and International real estate tax planning structures and real estate development tax matters.Manage the external accounting firm partners and tax co‑op student(s).Design and recommend technology and processDesign, document, and implement internal controls and processes where needed.Keep up‑to‑date of tax laws and regulations, and update stakeholders of key changes and impact to Hazelview funds and corporate.Job RequirementsKnowledge and ExperienceCPA, CA (or equivalent)MTax or In‑Depth tax program a requirement (completed or enrolled)Strong background in tax and accounting, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a tax compliance role.Knowledge of tax laws and willingness to learnDemonstrate creativity and flexibility at resolving issuesExperience with Taxprep or similar tax software is requiredExperience with Yardi accounting system is an assetStrong/advanced skills in Microsoft Excel (macro knowledge is an asset) and other Microsoft applicationsQualificationsAbility to work in a dynamic, complex, fast‑paced environment, to adapt quickly and to manage changing and competing priorities.Ability to work and act independently using good business and interpersonal judgment when assessing challenging situations.Strong stakeholder negotiation and relationship managementSelf‑motivated, results‑driven, entrepreneurial and proactive, with strong organizational and project management skills.Strong communication and presentation skills; Ability to deal effectively at all levels within the organization, and to garner respect internally and externally.Demonstrated leadership ability and initiative, particularly in implementing process improvement opportunities within tax, including the use of technology.Excellent attention to detail and time managementDemonstrate creativity and flexibility in resolvingHazelview Investments is an inclusive and equal opportunity employer.
