JOB SUMMARY:

The HR Generalist is a key position in supporting the employee life cycle process including hiring, onboarding, training, performance evaluation and maintenance of employee records. The incumbent is also responsible to ensure adherence to HR policies and company guidelines, including making recommendations for areas of improvement. The manager will also coordinate the health and safety and EMS programs for the facility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following; other duties may be assigned:

  • Recruit, interview and review and process employment applications for open positions.

  • Oversee the onboarding process to foster a positive attitude ensure employees complete all necessary activities including introduction to company, new hire paperwork, safety training and job orientation.

  • Process and maintain personnel files for production employees including promotions, transfers, disciplinary actions, layoffs and separations.

  • Maintain employee records and respond to any government inquiries relating to personnel.

  • Partner with key functional areas to ensure training records are accurate and up-to-date; maintain training logs for all employees.

  • Ensure Quality and Environmental system requirements are implemented, reviewed and improved (as needed) in the HR function.

  • Ensure health and safety requirements are met in accordance with the Health and Safety standards and work practices. Conduct safety audits and Health and Safety meetings; complete reports and respond to recommendations to the Joint Health and Safety committee. Administer First Aid Attendant program.

  • Investigate work-related accidents and injuries. Complete and maintain files with pertinent correspondence to WSIB; prepare required reports for Workman’s Compensation Board.

  • Coordinate and report Worker’s Compensation claims, complete required forms, communicate with employee and management regarding process, and follow up with Corporate HR.

  • Research and respond to employee questions regarding benefits or company policies.

  • Develop and conduct W.H.M.I.S training and any other training related to health and safety.

  • Collaborate with the Union Committee to address, develop and implement ergonomic improvements related to environmental, task or work related concerns. Work with the Union Committee to develop and administer modified work assignments, as required.

  • Prepare and maintain weekly indemnity and long-term disability claims.

  • Plan and organize training for production employees; maintain master training files.

  • Maintain attendance records, identify absentee trends and make recommendations to reduce absenteeism and turnover.

  • Address and respond to labor union matters including grievances and contract negotiations; act as plant management representative at hourly personnel hearings and investigations.

In order to be successful in this role, the HR Generalist must posses problem-solving skills, demonstrate a strong attention to detail with the ability to multi-task and be able to respond to changing demands and priorities. This is a hand-on role with involvement with a wide variety of generalist responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in HR or Business Administration and a minimum of 2-4 years of Human Resource experience. Experience in manufacturing environment is strongly preferred but not required. Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook. The individual must possess the ability to write reports, create and edit spreadsheets, business correspondence and procedure documents.

Experience working with a unionized workforce is highly desirable.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents includes policies, procedures and regulatory materials. Ability to write business reports, correspondence, policies and procedures. Ability to effectively present information, respond to questions, inquiries, or concerns in a timely manner. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly with all employees, management and outside agencies.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to perform fundamental math calculations, calculate discounts and percentages.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Must possess the ability to multi-task, respond to changing priorities and meet deadlines. Excellent time management skills are necessary to succeed in a fast-paced environment.

This position requires the ability to handle and maintain confidential information in a discreet manner. Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in processing information is critical. Ability to work as part of a team and strong commitment to customer service.
