Description
The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) has been a cornerstone of public education in the province for over 80 years, advocating for and supporting over 13,500 teachers in PreK-12 publicly funded schools. We are seeking a dynamic Executive Director to lead our organization, driving strategic initiatives and operational excellence.

Role Overview
Reporting directly to the STF Executive (the elected board of the organization), the Executive Director oversees staff in delivering programs and services to members. The Executive Director regularly reports on operational and financial matters to the STF Executive and works closely with the STF President to align efforts with the Federation's strategic goals. Additionally, the Executive Director develops relationships with various stakeholders, including education sector leaders and government bodies, to advocate for teachers' interests and improve educational quality.
The Executive Director provides strategic leadership in the areas of labor relations and programs that enhance teachers’ professional service. Additionally, the role is uniquely positioned to provide strategic and operational oversight to a number of programs for members, including: the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Retirement Plan; Members Health Plan; Portaplan; and, Long-Term Disability Plan. Finally, the Executive Director serves as the treasurer, overseeing the Federation’s financial management.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic & Operational Leadership
- Lead the development and implementation of the Federation’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities.
- Oversee a broad range of programs and services, ensuring they align with the needs of the membership and the public interest.
- Ensure effective governance by supporting the STF Executive in fulfilling its statutory, financial, and policy responsibilities.
Governance & Compliance
- Administer and ensure compliance with The Teachers’ Federation Act, 2006, STF bylaws, and other relevant legislation.
- Act as a key advisor to the STF Executive, providing insights and recommendations on governance, policy, and strategic issues.
- Liaise between the STF Executive and administrative staff to ensure that directives and policies are effectively implemented.
Relationship Management
- Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with STF members, local association leaders, committees, and boards.
- Act as the Federation’s representative and spokesperson in dealings with external stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, school boards, and other educational organizations.
- Advocate for the teaching profession, ensuring that the Federation’s policies and public relations initiatives are consistent with the public interest and the improvement of education.
People Leadership
- Foster a diverse and inclusive work environment that supports the professional growth and well-being of all staff.
- Maintain a collaborative, engaging workplace culture that enables the recruitment and retention of top talent across the organization, ensuring strong leadership at all levels.
Financial Oversight
- Manage the Federation’s financial resources, including its investment program and pension and benefit plans.
- Serve as the treasurer of the Federation, overseeing the development and management of the operating budget.
- Ensure that resources are allocated effectively and efficiently to support the Federation’s strategic goals.
Risk & Compliance Management
- Safeguard the Federation’s financial and knowledge assets by ensuring robust internal controls and management information systems.
- Regularly report to the STF Executive on the organization’s progress toward strategic goals and compliance with applicable laws and standards.
Required Qualifications
- A master’s degree in education, along with possession or eligibility for Saskatchewan teacher certification.
- A designation, or willingness to attain a designation, related to trustee training.
- A minimum of 10 years of teaching experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role accountable for operational and strategic outcomes, preferably within an educational setting.
- Proven experience in strategic planning, governance, financial management, and relationship-building in a multi-stakeholder environment.
