Position Summary:
The Chief Development Officer is the senior professional tasked with overseeing the growth, sustainability, and functions of all revenue streams of the Jewish Federation. This includes oversight of the Annual Campaign, Jewish Community Foundation, as well as supplemental giving and special project fundraising. This role will ensure that the Federation’s revenue streams are diversified and sustainable, driving increased financial resources to support community initiatives, programs, and long-term sustainability.
Job Responsibilities:
- Cultivate and steward relationships with key donors, prospects, and stakeholders, ensuring personalized engagement and alignment with the Jewish Federation’s mission and priorities.
- Lead the Annual Campaign, Jewish Community Foundation, and Financial Resource Development teams to ensure an integrated and strategic development department.
- Identify new opportunities for revenue generation, such as innovative giving programs and partnerships. Ensure sustainable growth in financial support from individuals, foundations, corporations, and other funding streams.
- Serve as an ambassador for the Federation, engaging with local, national, and international Jewish and philanthropic communities. Represent the Federation at community events, donor gatherings, and conferences to promote the organization’s mission and fundraising goals.
- Oversee the planning and execution of major fundraising events, including galas, donor appreciation events, and community-wide initiatives, ensuring they align with the overall development strategy and maximize fundraising outcomes.
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for key major funders, ensuring strong, ongoing engagement and oversight.
- Oversee the development department’s budget, ensuring effective use of resources and alignment with organizational priorities. Monitor financial performance against fundraising targets and adjust strategies as necessary.
- Work closely with other departments, especially planning and allocations, to align fundraising strategies with organizational goals and community needs.
- Lead rapid-response fundraising efforts during times of crisis, such as local, national, or international emergencies, ensuring the Federation can mobilize resources quickly to address urgent community needs.
- Work closely with volunteers and lay leaders involved in fundraising, providing them with the necessary tools, training, and guidance to enhance their effectiveness in donor outreach and engagement.
- Guide staff and lay leadership in implementing new approaches to donor cultivation, stewardship, solicitation and audience engagement.
- Foster a positive environment by building, inspiring and leading high-performing teams and driving the department to ensure they deliver effectively and efficiently to agreed individual and team goals.
- Oversee strategic recruiting and performance management of team members, maintaining a cohesive and respectful team culture, while ensuring appropriate employee fit, support, and development.
Qualifications:
- Leadership Experience: 7+ years of senior management experience, with proven success in revenue growth, strategic planning, staff leadership, and program evaluation in a nonprofit or comparable private sector role.
- Independent & Proactive: A self-starter who requires minimal direction, with the ability to take initiative, drive results, and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Relationship Building: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships, negotiate, resolve conflicts, and work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Stakeholder Management: Experience working in complex environments with multiple stakeholders, including navigating political landscapes.
- Strategic Thinking: Visionary thinker with a track record of executing long-term strategies, while also thriving in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
- Team Leadership: Proven ability to recruit, develop, and manage teams, providing performance feedback and professional development.
- Communication & Marketing: Strong leadership and organizational skills, with emphasis on marketing, brand management, and communications.
- Change Management: Demonstrated ability to lead teams through change, inspiring and motivating staff to achieve organizational goals.
- Innovation & Creativity: Ability to develop and implement fluid, dynamic fundraising strategies. Strong creative problem-solving skills to find innovative solutions for challenges facing the organization and community as a whole.
- Jewish Community Knowledge: Familiarity with Jewish values, community structures, and issues. Understanding of Israeli and Jewish issues is an asset.
