Montreal, Canada Nomic Bio Full time

About us:

Nomic was founded with the purpose of making biology easier to measure. To do this, we have untangled some of the most difficult problems in protein profiling. Our team is combining DNA nanotechnology, high-dimensional flow cytometry, laboratory automation, and machine learning to develop the world’s highest throughput proteomic platform: the nELISA.

Since spinning out of McGill University, we have partnered with and provided platform access to dozens of drug discovery groups including GSK, 4 of the top 10 pharmas, and leading biotechs. We have recently launched a state of the art manufacturing and protein profiling facility that enables multiplexed measurement of >2.5M samples a year, generating an effective 500M protein assays in the process.

We are building a diverse team of engineers, scientists, and world-changers. We like to break down difficult problems using a first principles approach, often leveraging the latest breakthroughs from across the scientific and technological spectrum to drive our mission forward.

Nomic is headquartered in Montreal, Canada with a satellite research lab in Boston, Massachusetts. The majority of our team is based in Montreal and works in a new, shared office/laboratory space with an in-person, but flexible work-from-home, policy.

About the role:

The manufacturing and profiling work of our operations requires the use of several instruments, from simple to complex, and they need to be in excellent working condition to assure high quality of the work that we do. In this position, you will perform various operation, maintenance, calibration, and monitoring of laboratory and manufacturing equipment, and controls relating to the operation of systems and equipment in our Lab Operations.

What you will be doing:

  • You will inspect, test/calibrate, evaluate, and maintain the operation of critical equipment and systems to provide safe and reliable manufacturing processes. Our current list of instruments includes, but is not limited to, flow cytometers, robotic liquid handlers, cold-storage inventory robotic systems, centrifuges, shakers, water purification system and various analytical laboratory instrumentation.

  • You will perform Calibration Assessments for instruments to ensure the maintenance/calibration task is set up correctly and ensure that the instrument ranges, calibration test points and tolerances are aligned with the process ranges and tolerances.

  • You will lead the delivery, setup and acceptance testing of new equipment, working with vendor Field Service Engineers and laboratory managers.

  • You will use established internal procedures as well as industry standards, manufacturer procedures, and similar for the proper calibration and troubleshooting of measuring and test equipment.

  • You will support Asset Managers on daily operational checks which may include maintaining, repairing, lubricating, inspecting, and testing of equipment.

  • You will work with Asset Managers/Owners to keep instrument operation and maintenance SOPs updated and accurate asset maintenance and repair records.

  • You will determine impact of required work, communicate, perform, coordinate, and/or supervise major repairs with laboratory manager and other facilities staff/contractors and users to minimize service interruptions.

  • You will monitor and respond to system failures, alarms, and abnormal site conditions by taking appropriate corrective actions.

  • This role requires the ability to troubleshoot using a variety of diagnostic tools and standard equipment to isolate malfunctions and effect appropriate corrective actions without detailed instruction.

  • This role has the opportunity to work with our Automation team to execute various test aspects on instruments, such as volumetric calibrations on robotics

What we’re looking for:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or Associate Degree plus formal technical education and trade Certificate of Qualification or Technologist diploma at community college level)

  • Minimum 3 years related experience with instrumentation on process equipment and utility equipment (5 years with Associate Degree). Experience with biotech industry equipment, especially those listed above in the “About this Role” section, is a strong asset.

  • Industrial Electrician (442A), Instrumentation and Control Technician (447A) or similar is an asset.

  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple and shifting priorities.

  • Requires onsite presence daily (not a remote position). May need to respond call-in emergency situations.

  • Fluency in English is required as our customers and vendors are primarily located in the USA. In addition, this position will interact with our team members within our USA entity.

Join us if you:

  • Connect deeply with our mission, ambition and sense of duty. Our mission isn’t marketing flash: we developed our technology to better measure biology and discover biomarkers for early disease detection. We firmly believe we will be successful in literally eradicating certain diseases by enabling them to be diagnosed earlier. We also believe that our hard work to bring this technology to its full potential is our duty.

  • Are up for a challenge and want to grow: We are a team of problem-solvers, and we continually put ourselves to the test and go into the unknown. We have a growth mindset, both on hard and soft skills, and we rely on each other to give critical and candid feedback to ensure that we can all reach our full potential.

  • Want to be at the cutting-edge of biotechnology. The nELISA is a new tool that leverages DNA nanotechnology to generate proteomic data more efficiently than ever before. You get to design, build and run the system that will run the technology going forward.

  • Love hands-on lab work, and want to take hold of key learnings from experiments, and use them to develop improved analytical methods to ensure the robust biological validation of immunoassays.

  • Prefer working and communicating within a diverse cross-functional team. You would get to interface with teammates from the Engineering, Operations, and Commercial teams on a daily basis, joining a collaborative, diverse, and inclusive team where your ideas will be valued.

If you are passionate about lab work, want to drive innovation in proteomics, and are eager to make a meaningful impact in the world, we invite you to apply and join us on our journey to redefine proteomics and the understanding of biology.
