Vancouver, Canada Tapestry Research Group Full time

About Tapestry

The Tapestry Research Group (Tapestry) is a team of interdisciplinary professionals with over 25 years of experience exclusively supporting Indigenous communities in British Columbia and across Canada. We offer a diverse range of services, all of which emphasize the importance of participatory community engagement, the strengthening of Indigenous governmental capacity through the development of robust information management systems and decision-making frameworks, as well as the use of technology to support territorial and community planning and capacity building.

About the Position:

Tapestry is seeking an intermediate GIS technician with three years of experience in performing mapping and geospatial analysis work. The ideal candidate would be proactive, independent, and flexible, and most importantly, has a problem-solving can-do attitude.

This role can be hybrid if the candidate has their own GIS workstation set-up at home. A typical day involves 7 hours of work in a fast-paced office environment, but the ideal candidate would have the ability to self-manage timelines with minimal direction to consistently meet deadlines.

Roles and Responsibilities

This is an intermediate role that takes direction from Tapestry’s GIS Lead but will also work in some capacity with other team members, including the Director and Senior Project Manager. Being able to understand and communicate with people who come from various professional backgrounds is required.

The ideal candidate would also have strong attention for details and a natural passion for maps—producing visually effective maps to communicate geospatial information, which are accessibly and aesthetically pleasing.

Data processing and organizing reference libraries is a key aspect of this job. The ideal candidate would compile, organize, file, and process various types of data by following established protocols, while also providing input and support in refining Tapestry’s data management systems. The ideal candidate would also maintain confidentiality and properly process and handle confidential documents, files, and information.

Responsibilities may include, but not be limited to:

  • Locate and source geospatial information and data sets
  • Organize, manage, convert, and georeference data
  • Develop maps and geospatial data for a range of uses
  • Edit and re-express geospatial data and maps for design
  • Follow strict protocols of confidentiality in handling client data and materials
  • Manage tasks taking notes and providing updates on project management software

Skills and Qualifications

The following skills and qualifications are required:

  • Master’s degree or technical diploma in GIS
  • Proficiency with Esri software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Survey123)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365
  • Experience with scripting, especially Python, JavaScript, and SQL
  • Experience working with a diverse range of data
  • Familiarity with Provincial and Federal Data warehouses and GIS data formats
  • Ability to plan and organize tasked assignments and work to successfully meet deadlines
  • Ability and interest to learn new data management approaches and software
  • Ability to work well with inter-disciplinary teams

The following will be considered assets, but not required:

  • Experience with QGIS
  • Experience working in environmental resource management, anthropology, or archaeology
  • Knowledge of cloud-based storage and content management systems
  • Knowledge of vector-based graphics software like Adobe Illustrator
  • Knowledge of CAD software
  • Knowledge of SQL and databases
  • Knowledge of photogrammetry software

Job Type: Freelance

Pay: $32.00-$45.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Vancouver, BC V5T 1Z7: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (preferred)

Experience:

  • GIS technical: 2 years (required)

Work Location: Hybrid remote in Vancouver, BC V5T 1Z7
