Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Principal at the PIB Education Centre, the Secondary Level Teacher position will provide quality-learning opportunities at the Secondary Level to support student intellectual, spiritual, physical, and emotional development. This will be achieved through providing academic and other necessary support for student learning. This is a full-time/permanent position teaching high school students and young adults.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide, promote, and deliver an effective individualized multi-subject program for high school learners.
  • Develop individualized education plans for specifically identified students when required.
  • Develop and maintain yearly, monthly, and daily instructional plans. Submit yearly plans to the PIB Education Centre Principal.
  • Prepare instructional materials, supplies, and teaching aids for classroom use. Order instructional supplies for classroom use and maintain inventory when required.
  • Be flexible with instructional techniques and delivery to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Understand online instruction and the ability to deliver online modules.
  • Maintain effective discipline and a safe learning environment in the classroom and other school-sponsored events and project activities.
  • Contribute to the professional development and enhancement of education by participating in professional development and cultural and educational events within the community.
  • Attend staff meetings and work collaboratively with the PIB Education team.
  • Network and be knowledgeable of resources available to students for academic, emotional, mental, and spiritual support.
  • Maintain student records: attendance, evaluation, report cards, discipline, and other documents required by the Ministry of Education, PIB Education Centre, and First Nation Education Steering Committee.
  • Assess student achievement and provide progress reports.
  • Develop and maintain communication with PIB Education Centre staff regarding the needs and progress of learners.
  • Accept constructive criticism and recognize the value of continuous self-evaluation and improvement regarding teaching methods, strategies, and lessons.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for students.
  • Always ensure and maintain professional conduct and standards.
  • Assist students with Career Planning/Exploration/Work Experience.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Language and Culture staff to create and carry out lessons that teach the Okanagan language and culture.
  • Adhere to B.C. Curriculum in all courses delivered while adapting and introducing Okanagan Cultural and Language elements when possible.

Accountability:

  • Reports to Adult Education Principal.
  • Education Director, when necessary.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Minimum Academic/Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Education Degree or equivalent to B.C. Teaching Standards.
  • Familiar with BC Curriculum at Secondary levels/Adult Dogwood Program.
  • Other Certification, Licenses, Designations and/or Training:
  • Current British Columbia Teaching Certification.
  • Ongoing professional development training.
  • Pass a Criminal Records Check.
  • Specific Job Skills and Levels:
  • Effective conflict management.
  • Effective academic programming and planning.
  • Good organizational skills and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in developing effective and flexible, individualized learning programs for alternative high school learners.
  • Innovative and flexible.
  • Strength-based and Wholistic Approach to practice.
  • Understanding of the Penticton Indian Band community.
  • Knowledge of Okanagan culture, some language, and willingness to learn more.

Minimum Level of Experience:

  • Two years of related work experience in teaching, preferably in a First Nation education setting.

Assets:

  • Experience working in Alternative Education Programs.
  • Experience working in a First Nation Educational setting.
  • Experience in working with Indigenous students at the secondary level is preferred.
  • Background in special education.
  • Knowledge of Okanagan Syilx Language and Culture.
  • Trauma Informed/Cultural Sensitivity Training.
