Senior Mechanical Engineer – Location

Location can be Peterborough, Burlington, or Kitchener, Ontario, Canada (Mobile working arrangement – up to 3 days per week onsite)

About the Opportunity

Westinghouse Electric Canada is a leading supplier of custom equipment, process systems and engineering consultant services for the Nuclear industry in Canada. The successful candidate will join an innovative team that supports Westinghouse’s mission to provide clean energy solutions.

What will you do?

Your day to day:

  1. Provide input and direction to the development of conceptual/detailed equipment designs as they progress through a structured design process.
  2. Provide technical oversight and mentoring of more junior members of the Engineering team.
  3. Perform both classical hand calculations and analysis (including FEA) to qualify systems and/or components against applicable codes & standards.
  4. Prepare clear and concise design reports and technical specifications.
  5. Review, approve and seal design reports, technical documentation and drawings.
  6. Drive innovation and new methods in the development of new technologies and nuclear systems.
  7. Collaborate globally within the Westinghouse Engineering framework alongside SMEs and nuclear specialists.
  8. Support resolution of issues throughout design, manufacture and testing of systems and/or components.
What will you bring?

Who you are:

Required:
  1. Mechanical Engineering degree or other relevant engineering discipline.
  2. Licensed member of Professional Engineers Ontario required.
  3. 6+ years of relevant experience.
  4. Experience in conceptual design development, design reviews and engineering change control processes.
  5. Experience in the substantiation of custom equipment typically: steel structures, hoisting/lifting systems, mechanical drive/positioning systems.
  6. Experience working within 3D CAD systems and with ANSYS (FEA).
  7. Thorough understanding of manufacturing techniques, welding procedures or specifications and associated inspection techniques.
  8. Strong written and verbal communication skills and comfortable leading meetings and giving presentations.
  9. Strong interpersonal skills, experience working effectively in a team environment.
Preferred:
  1. Application of the relevant codes and standards applicable to the design of nuclear components and systems including specialized tooling and remote handling equipment.
  2. Experience with software such as Solid Works, Autodesk Inventor and ANSYS (FEA).
  3. Experience in pressure retaining systems to CSA and ASME design codes.
  4. Experience interfacing with customer representatives and providing oversight to vendors.
  5. Experience with radiological shielding design and/or equipment.
